  • They play off in Saturday's Grand Final at the MCG.

The 2019 AFL Grand Final shapes as a beauty and this year it is the Richmond Tigers and the GWS Giants that play off for premiership glory.

First bounce is at 2.30pm on Saturday September 28 and the action will be broadcast live on Channel 7.

Match Preview

Richmond head into the decider as favourites and qualified in 3rd position at the end of the home and away season before registering wins over Brisbane and Geelong in the finals series.

GWS have done it the hard way, coming from 6th. They smashed the Western Bulldogs by 58 points in week one of the finals before registering thrilling wins over both Brisbane by three points) and Collingwood by four.

Despite their underdog status it would be a foolish person that writes them off. They are set to regain some key players and are peaking at the right time.

Leon Cameron's side average more clearances and contested possessions than Richmond and this aspect of their game will take them far, as it did in the wet against Collingwood last weekend.

Toby Greene, Josh Kelly and Jeremy Cameron loom as keys for the expansion club. Cameron has a great record against the Tigers and is the Coleman Medalist from 2019 for most goals scored by an individual. Dylan Grimes is likely to get the job on Cameron.

For Richmond, their obvious match winner is Dustin Martin, who won the Norm Smith Medal in 2017. Matt de Boer is the man tipped to tag Martin but the Tigers have plenty of others that will need to be stopped, including Bachar Houli off halfback, as well as Tom Lynch up forward.

Both sides have plenty of finals experience but it is GWS that are heading into the unknown as this is their first ever Grand Final. The expansion club joined the AFL in 2012.

Richmond appear in the decider for the second time in three years, having won the flag in 2017. Another premiership will see their tally increase to 12 since joining the league in 1908.

Selection News

There will be plenty of interest at selection for both sides during the week with some big names battling injury concerns. Jack Graham is likely to miss for Richmond after dislocating his shoulder in the win over Geelong. Nathan Broad needs to pass a concussion test. Sydney Stack, Marlion Pickett, Jack Ross and Kamdyn McIntosh are among those that could sneak back into the 22.

GWS will regain Toby Greene from suspension. Lachie Whitfield is likely to return, while Stephen Coniglio is an outside chance of returning from a knee injury. Phil Davis will be monitored at training after struggling with injury in the win over Collingwood.

Match Odds

Richmond $1.36
GWS Giants $3.30

Stats

The two sides have met on 12 occasions since GWS entered the league in 2012 and it is Richmond with the advantage with eight wins to four. The Tigers claimed the Round 17 clash between the two sides this year by 27 points. That was held at the MCG. GWS won the Round 3 encounter by 49 points at Giants Stadium.

In 2017, the two sides featured in the Preliminary Final. The Tigers took out that game by 36 points. Richmond are unbeaten in four games between the two sides at the MCG. They have won 33 of their past 36 games at the venue. The Giants have won two of four at the home of footy in 2019.

An interesting stat is that every Grand Final since 2012 has been fought out between a Melbourne based side and an interstate side. The locals have won five and lost two of those. However, since West Coast became the first non Victorian side to make an AFL Grand Final in 1991, it is the visitors with the advantage at nine wins to eight.

Prediction and Tips

Despite qualifying in 6th position, it is hard not to be impressed with GWS' form in the finals. They will be in the game for a long way and represent value at the line with the 18.5 point start. Their gruelling finals campaign may show in the end and another bet to consider is the Quarter by Quarter leader option as GWS/GWS/Richmond/Richmond.
