  • Here is our preview of the Round 9 encounter

Richmond and Hawthorn square off on Sunday May 19 in what shapes as one of the big games of AFL Round 9.

The MCG clash gets underway at 3.20PM and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Sports.

Match Preview

Richmond have opened up their 2019 campaign with five wins from eight games and have been able to pick up some impressive victories in the absence of a number of their injured key players.

Last Sunday, the likes of Shai Bolton and Jason Castagna rose to the fore by combining for six goals in the Tigers 25 point win over Fremantle.

On the same day, Hawthorn defeated the premiership fancies, GWS, by 33 points. The Hawks have been inconsistent this season, winning just four of eight and have thrown away a couple of games that they arguably should have won.

However, any Hawthorn side with Alistair Clarkson at the helm must be respected. They will look to play a 'keepings off' style of footy, chipping it around the ground before looking for a contest inside forward 50m. James Sicily comes in with good form, while Jaegar O'Meara will be keen to turn things around after a couple of relatively quiet weeks.

In the absence of the likes of Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin, Tom Lynch and Dustin Martin loom as key players for Richmond, while Dylan Grimes and David Astbury will look to stifle the Hawks forwards.

Selection News

Richmond will be without Tony Nankervis and Jack Ross after that duo sustained injuries last weekend. Ivan Soldo may come in to bolster the ruck. Nick Vlaustin and Daniel Rioli face fitness tests in their quests to return to the 22.

Hawthorn's Isaac Smith missed the Giants game with a foot injury and will be monitored at training. Jack Scrimshaw should be ok to go after sitting out the last half of the win last weekend. Chad Wingard missed that game with hamstring tightness and faces a fitness test.

Match Odds

Richmond $1.51
Hawthorn $2.50

Stats

Richmond have won the past three games between the two sides including last year's Qualifying Final by 31 points. Dustin Martin and Dion Prestia were the stars for the Tigers, while Liam Shiels and Tom Mitchell were among Hawthorn's best.

In Round 3 last year it was a 13 point win for the Tigers at the MCG. They are two from three at the venue this year, while the Hawks are two from five.

Prediction and Tips

A lot might depend of just which Hawthorn side shows up. The Hawks can capitalise on Richmond's injuries but the Tigers have shown they are up to the task regardless of who is in the side.
