  • The Tigers and the Swans square off in a big clash in AFL Round 5.
  • Here is our preview of the Easter Saturday fixture

Richmond and the Sydney Swans feature in one of the big games of AFL Round 5 and the Saturday April 20 clash gets underway at 7.25PM AEST at the MCG.

The Tigers have been posted as favourites in the early head to head betting and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Richmond have had a mixed start to the 2019 home and away season with injuries to key players a big talking point. The Tigers have won two of their four games and did well to knock over Port Adelaide last weekend, with the likes of Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin missing from their best 22.

Martin returns this weekend and will be one of the key players for the yellow and black, as will Tom Lynch and Josh Caddy in the forward half. The former Suns player, Lynch, comes off a six goal haul last weekend.

Sydney have also made an indifferent start, winning just one of their three games to date. That victory came against Carlton in Round 3. The Swans have gone down to the Western Bulldogs, Adelaide and Melbourne in their other three games. Those opponents have hardly been setting the world on fire.

John Longmire's side will once again be relying on big games from Lance Franklin, Josh Kennedy and Isaac Heeney. Franklin has struggled to reach full fitness after missing the majority of the pre-season due to a groin injury. Second tier players such as Sam Reid and Tom McCartin also need to stand up in order to take the heat off the familiar names.

Selection News

Richmond are set to regain Dustin Martin from suspension, while Bachar Houli is another likely inclusion. Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin are still another week or two away.

Sydney have a number of injuries to key players including Nick Smith and Jarrad McVeigh, who are both a number of weeks away.

Match Odds

Richmond $1.39
Sydney Swans $2.85

*correct at the time of writing

Richmond were winners the last time the two sides met, defeating Sydney by 26 points at Marvel Stadium in Round 15 last season. Toby Nankervis, Kane Lambert and Jack Riewoldt were the starts for the yellow and black, while Josh Kennedy was one of Sydney's best.

The Swans won the last time the two sides met at the MCG, producing a forth quarter turnaround to score by nine points in Round 13 of 2017. The Swans won both of their games at the venue last season and have won seven of their last 10 in Victoria. Since the 2017 loss to Sydney, Richmond have won 23 of 25 at the MCG.

Prediction and Tips

Richmond will be too good for a Sydney side that are just going at the moment.
