  • Here is our preview of the Round 6 clash.

Saturday night footy sees the Sydney Swans take on the GWS Giants in the local derby between the AFL's Sydney based sides.

The Round 6 encounter gets underway at 7.25PM at the SCG and all the action can be seen on Fox Footy.

Match Preview

Sydney have struggled in season 2019, winning just one of their first five games and they are in danger of missing out on the finals for the first time since 2009. The Swans come off a 22 point loss to Richmond and their only win this season was against Carlton by 19 points in Round 3.

GWS come in with some mixed form. They were brilliant winners over Geelong in Geelong two weeks ago but in Round 5 they were outclassed by Fremantle to the tune of 24 points.

The Giants should bounce back against Sydney but will need to make sure there are no signs of the lethargy that seemed to be evident in the loss to the Dockers.

They have a host of midfielders that should provide too much depth for Sydney. Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield head in with strong form, while Jeremy Cameron remains a focal point up forward. Cameron leads the competition for goals scored with 21 majors.

At the other end of the ground, Lance Franklin will be one of the keys for Sydney but the superstar forward has battled at times this season and has booted just 11. He kicked four in the loss to the Tigers last weekend.

Franklin's cause hasn't been helped by the lack of supply from further up the ground and the Swans have average just 73 points per game this season.

Selection News

Sydney have no immediate injury concerns out of the Richmond game but Heath Grundy, Nick Smith and Will Hayward are among those that remain on the sidelines.

GWS may be without Phil Davis after their captain hurt his ankle last weekend. Toby Greene is another that is expected to miss.

Match Odds

Sydney $2.67
GWS Giants $1.44

Stats

Sydney have won 11 of the 16 encounters but went down to GWS in the Elimination Final last year by 49 points. Prior to that, the Swans won the two home and away games between the two sides in 2018, including a Round 22 win by 20 points at Spotless Stadium.

Earlier last year, the Swans accounted for the Giants by 16 at the SCG. Sydney have a moderate record at their home ground over 2018 and 2019, winning five from 14 at the venue. GWS have ventured to the SCG on seven occasions since 2012 for just two wins.
