Friday night AFL action sees the Sydney Swans take on Hawthorn at the SCG.

The June 21 encounter gets underway at 7.50pm and all the action can be seen live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

The two sides have a rich recent history and have played out some classic encounters in recent years. But both have been off the pace in 2019.

Hawthorn have won five of 12, while Sydney have won just four games. However, the Swans have the superior recent form, winning three of their past five, while the two losses were narrow ones against some quality opposition in Geelong and Collingwood.

John Longmire's side come off the bye in Round 13. Prior to the break they defeated the 2018 premiers, West Coast, by 45 points at the SCG.

Hawthorn have lost their past two games. Those came either side of the bye. Last weekend it was a 19 point loss to Essendon. Prior to that it was the same margin against Brisbane.

Both sides play a defensive style of football. Look for Hawthorn to play a keepings off brand of game with James Sicily to play a sweeping role in the backline. The Hawks issues are at the other end of the ground, where they continue to struggle to find targets inside forward 50m.

At the other end, Lance Franklin looms as a focal point against his former club, while Tom Papley and Isaac Heeney are others that can give the home side the edge.

Selection News

Josh Kennedy is a chance to return for Sydney. Colin O'Riordan, Jackson Thurlow and Jarrad McVeigh sustained injuries in the West Coast game and will be monitored at training. Of that trio, McVeigh is least likely.

Hawthorn are likely to be without Chad Wingard for another week. Mitch Lewis and Jarryd Roughead are among a couple of forwards that are lurking in the VFL.

Match Odds

Sydney Swans $1.54
Hawthorn $2.37

Stats

Little has separated the two sides in recent years and their past six encounters have been decided by 14 points or fewer. All have been low scoring affairs. Hawthorn have held the upper hand, winning four of the past five.

The Hawks locked in a top four spot in Round 23 of last season by knocking over the Swans by nine points at the SCG. Earlier in the year, Sydney stormed home to win by eight points over the Hawks in Round 8 at the MCG, thanks largely to a seven goal haul by Ben Ronke.

Hawthorn have a brilliant record at the SCG, winning their past five at the venue. They have ventured interstate on two occasions so far this season, winning against Adelaide in Round 1 before losing to Brisbane in Round 12.

Prediction and Tips

While the Hawks always seem to find a way to win at the SCG, Friday night does shape as a tough assignment. They were woeful when heading inside 50m last week, while at the other end, the Swans are firing.
