One of the key games of AFL Round 4 shapes as the Thursday night clash between the Sydney Swans and Melbourne.

The April 11 encounter gets underway at 7.20PM at the SCG on April 11 and all the action can be seen live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

It has been a horror start for Melbourne in season 2019. Despite being tipped as one of the teams to beat heading into the year, the Demons have failed to fire and have lost all three of their home and away games thus far.

In round one it was a 26 point loss to Port Adelaide before going down to Geelong by 80. Last weekend they were dealt an 18 point loss by the previously winless side, Essendon.

Sydney haven't been faring too much better but they did manage to register a win last weekend against Carlton by 19 points. Previously, they went down to the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide in the opening two weeks.

The Swans head in as slight favourites in the head to head betting on the back of the home ground advantage but the SCG hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the locals in the last season or so.

Sydney will look to exploit Melbourne's leaky backline that have conceded an average of 114 points per game so far this year. Lance Franklin, Isaac Heeney and Tom Papley should be dangerous in front of goal, while further up the ground, Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker will look to supply the Swans forwards.

Kennedy and Parker take on the likes of Angus Brayshaw, Jack Viney and Clayton Oliver in the middle of the ground and the battle here will be decisive, given the small dimensions of the SCG.

Team News

Sydney will be without Jarrad McVeigh and Will Hayward due to injury. James Rose, Ryan Clarke and James Rowbottom are among those with good form in the NEAFL.

It will be interesting to see if Melbourne swing the axe after their poor form of late. However, a number of senior players remain on the sidelines including Steven May, Jordan Lewis and Aaron vandenBerg.

Match Odds

Sydney Swans $1.65
Melbourne $2.15

Stats

Sydney have won their past seven games against Melbourne and those wins have come at an average margin of 43 points. Two of those encounters were played at the SCG. Melbourne have not won at the venue since 2006. Interestingly, since the start of 2018, Sydney have won just five of their 13 games at the venue.

The most recent clash between the two sides was played at the MCG in Round 21 last year and that went the way of the Swans by nine points. Jake Lloyd and Josh Kennedy found plenty of the ball for the winners, while Clayton Oliver and Angus Brayshaw were among Melbourne's best.

Prediction and Tips

I am backing Melbourne in to overcome their poor start to the season. They were good in periods against Essendon last weekend and if they can tighten up inside defensive 50 they can break through for a much needed win.
