West Coast Eagles v Fremantle Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Eagles to continue Western Derby dominance

Trent Orwin 10 Apr 2019
  • West Coast have won seven-straight against Fremantle
  • Expect there to be some heat towards Andrew Gaff

Both teams sit inside the top eight ahead of Saturday night’s Western Derby clash between West Coast and Fremantle at Optus Stadium.

The Round 4 match-up between the two WA teams can be seen on Fox Footy with the broadcast starting at 6:00pm local time (8:00pm AEST). The first bounce takes place at 6:10pm AWST.

Match Preview

The reigning premiers, the West Coast Eagles, have started to hit top gear after three rounds with two consecutive victories over GWS Giants and Collingwood. The latest was a 22-point win over the Magpies at the MCG.

Fremantle have also begun the season with a 2-1 record. They narrowly held on to defeat St Kilda by five points with the Saints kicking themselves out of victory with 21 to 16 scoring shots.

Expect this match to have a fair bit of heat following their last meeting. It wasn’t the 58-point smashing by the Eagles that will be remembered. Andrew Gaff threw away his chance at playing in the 2018 final series, and subsequently a premiership, when he had a brain fade and was dealt an eight-week suspension for striking Andrew Brayshaw; the high-impact force left Brayshaw with a broken jaw.

Once the physicality between the two sides wears off, expect the superior Eagles outfit to take advantage of the game, led by Gaff who was excellent in his comeback game against Collingwood. The Eagles’ tall timber, Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling, should be a difficult match-up for the Dockers. A seven-match winning streak in favour of the Eagles is also a telling stat heading into the Derby clash.

Team News

Liam Duggan could return for West Coast who have a small injury list at the moment.

Fremantle’s injury list is much bigger, and Nat Fyfe is unlikely to play against the Eagles after suffering concussion against St Kilda. Expect the Dockers to be extra cautious with their best player and captain.

Match Odds

West Coast $1.15
Fremantle $5.50

Stats

West Coast have won the last seven matches against Fremantle. Most of those meetings haven’t been close contests either.

They won 21.16 (142) to 13.6 (84) last time the two sides met in Round 20 last year.

Prediction and Tips

West Coast has the wood over Fremantle and fresh-off a win over Collingwood, they should win the Western Derby by a big margin.
