  • There is plenty at stake when the Eagles take on the Hawks in Round 23.
  • Here is our preview of the Saturday night Perth Stadium clash

One of the big games of AFL Round 23 shapes as the Saturday night encounter between the West Coast Eagles and Hawthorn at Perth Stadium.

First bounce is at 8.10pm AEST or 6.10pm local time and the game can be seen on Channel 7 and Foxtel.

Match Preview

It is the final home and away game of 2019 for both sides and there is plenty at stake. West Coast need a win to have any chance of securing a home final. At the moment, the Eagles sit in 3rd position on the ladder.

If they secure the four points and either Geelong or Brisbane lose their respective matches, the 2018 premiers will gain the home final that comes with a top two finish.

Hawthorn are currently in 9th position and a win will see them jump into the top eight. However, they will then need the Western Bulldogs to go down to Adelaide the following day.

The two sides last met in Round 15 and since then the Hawks have won five of seven. James Worpel, Chad Wingard and Jaegar O'Meara have been solid in the middle of the ground, while a six-goal haul from the retiring veteran, Jarryd Roughead, saw them prevail by 70 points against the Gold Coast in Round 22.

On the same day, West Coast went down to Richmond by six points in wet conditions at the MCG. However, the Eagles will be tough to beat on their home deck. Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling should appreciate a return to what should be a dryer deck, while Elliot Yeo and Jeremy McGovern are other stars that will have an influence.

Selection News

Mark Hutchings is set to miss for West Coast after hurting his hamstring in Round 22. Liam Duggan may come back in.

Hawthorn are unlikely to make too many changes after their win last weekend. Mitch Lewis will be out to prove his fitness, while James Cousins, Matt Walker and Jack Scrimshaw have some solid VFL form at the moment.

Match Odds

West Coast Eagles $1.23
Hawthorn $4.05

Stats

The two sides met just eight weeks ago and it was West Coast in a thriller at the MCG by six points. Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff combined for 73 possessions in that game, while Jaegar O'Meara starred for the Hawks.

West Coast have now won the past two between the two sides. Hawthorn have never faced the Eagles at Perth Stadium. They have journeyed to the new venue just once for a win over Fremantle.
