  • Here is our preview of Friday night clash.

Round 9 of the AFL home and away season gets underway when the West Coast Eagles take on Melbourne at Optus Stadium on Friday night.

The May 17 encounter gets underway at 8.10PM AEST or 6.10PM local time and all the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

The two sides have had some contrasting fortunes in season 2019. West Coast have won five and lost three, while Melbourne have won three and lost five.

Both sides have won their past two games. West Coast come off an 18 point win, while Melbourne somehow stole the points against the Gold Coast Suns, overcoming a six point deficit with 40 seconds left to win by a point, right on the final siren.

That win followed a five point win over Hawthorn the week prior and the Demons will again need to find a way in order to get their season back on track.

But the task at hand will be hard against the Eagles. The premiers from 2018 boast a number of big names that are in good form, including Elliot Yeo, Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff, while their key position players such as Josh Kennedy and Jeremy McGovern shape as match winners.

Melbourne can exert some superiority in the middle with Max Gawn, Clayton Oliver and Nathan Jones among some that can help the Demons get on top at the clearances and contested possessions.

Selection News

West Coast don't have too many injury concerns. Tom Hickey is a chance to return from a hamstring injury, while Willie Rioli is edging closer towards a return.

Melbourne lose Michael Hibberd, who sustained a broken collarbone last weekend. Jake Melksham is another that is on the sidelines for an extended period.Jordan Lewis pulled up sore from the Suns game but should play. Jake Lever, Steven May and Mitch Hannan are a couple of weeks away.

Match Odds

West Coast Eagles $1.26
Melbourne $3.70

Stats

West Coast thumped Melbourne at Perth Stadium in the Preliminary Final last year by 66 points and it was Josh Kennedy and Jamie Cripps that led the way by combining for seven goals.

However, Melbourne claimed the Round 21 clash between the two sides by 17 points at the venue and on that occasion it was Angus Brayshaw and Max Gawn that starred for the Dees. Elliot Yeo and Dom Sheed were among West Coast's best and it should be noted that the Eagles were without Josh Kennedy for that game, while Jack Darling went down early with concussion.

Melbourne have won six of their past eight interstate games, including both road-trips this year. West Coast have won three of four at home this year.

Prediction and Tips

West Coast have had a few hiccups this season but their last couple of weeks have been promising. At their home ground they will be too strong.
