Round 14 of the AFL home and away season gets underway on Thursday night when the West Coast Eagles take on Essendon at Optus Stadium in Perth.

First bounce for June 20 encounter is at 6.10pm local time or 8.10pm AEST and all the action can be seen live on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

Match Preview

West Coast head in as favourites for the Round 14 match but will need to improve on their last start effort that saw them go down to Sydney by 45 points at the SCG.

That loss came before the recent bye and Adam Simpson's men have since had a chance to regroup. Prior to the Swans loss, last year's premiers had won five on the trot.

They face an Essendon line up that should head in with confidence after winning their past two. The Bombers have squared their win-loss ledger at six apiece, while the Eagles are eight and four from their 12 matches this year.

Essendon claimed a victory over the Eagles this time a year ago and will look to take them on with fast ball movement from the back half and through the middle of the ground.

Defensively, the Bombers have been one of the best in the competition in recent weeks with Michael Hurley and Cale Hooker stifling their opposition forwards.

It will be interesting to see how the likes of Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling fare against those players. That duo have combined for 53 goals this season.

At the other end of the ground, Orazio Fantasia and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti should provide plenty of spark, while the battle in the midfield should be absorbing with Zac Merrett, Dyson Heppell and Darcy Parish up against the likes of Luke Shuey, Dom Sheed and Andrew Gaff.

Selection News

West Coast have a number of players on the injury list but Shanon Hurn and Elliot Yeo are likely to be available. Nic Natanui is edging closer towards a return.

At Essendon, Jake Stringer is set to miss after sustaining an ankle injury in the win over Hawthorn. Mitch Brown looms as a possible replacement and a target inside 50m. David Myers has been playing some solid footy in the VFL and will be considered.

Match Odds

West Coast Eagles $1.33
Essendon $3.14

Stats

Essendon have won the past two games between the two sides. The Bombers took out the corresponding game in Round 14 last year at Optus Stadium, surprising the eventual premiers by 28 points. The jumped out of the blocks early in that game. In 2018 the Dons scored a 61 point victory over the Eagles in Round 9 at Marvel Stadium.

West Coast have won five of their six games at Optus Stadium in 2019. Essendon have a solid recent record when venturing outside of Victoria, winning five of their six interstate games since the start of 2018.

Prediction and Tips

I am not convinced about Essendon despite their recent performances. West Coast will provide a much sterner test than what the Dons have faced in recent weeks and will be hard to beat at Perth
