Western Bulldogs v Carlton Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Blues to keep it close against Bulldogs

Trent Orwin 17 Apr 2019
  • Western Bulldogs have lost past two
  • Carlton yet to win

The Western Bulldogs meet a winless Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Easter Sunday with the Round 5 match a must-win for the Blues.

Fox Footy will broadcast the match live from 1:00pm with the first bounce taking place at 1:10pm.

Match Preview

The Western Bulldogs have slowed down with two-straight wins followed by consecutive losses. The Gold Coast Suns defeated them by five points before Collingwood kicked away late to win by 14 points.

Carlton come off a narrow two-point loss to the Suns after Jack Bowes kicked the winning goal with around 10 seconds left to deliver the Blues their fourth-straight loss.

History suggests the Bulldogs will be too good for the Blues but I get a feeling that the Blues will give them a run for their money. Carlton superstar Patrick Cripps will be the key to success, but his teammates must stand up and play well. Kicking goals is the concern for the Blues, however, they could dominate the ruck contest with a much higher hitout to advantage rare than the Dogs.

The Bulldogs forwards have shared the goals around so far this season which means they have plenty of options going forward. The Blues’ backline will need to hold firm in order for the Blues to prevail.

Team News

The Western Bulldogs have no new injury concerns as they head into Sunday’s game.

Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer returned via the VFL last week with 15 disposals and a goal. He is likely to return to the senior side this week.

Match Odds

Western Bulldogs $1.38
Carlton $3.00

* Correct at time of writing

The Western Bulldogs have dominated Carlton recently, with the past five matches going the way of the Bulldogs. The margin has been 11 or more in all five contests, with the Blues struggling to score against the Dogs. During their past five matches against them, the Blues have scored 49, 59, 62, 49 and 53.

Looking at the season averages, the Bulldogs are having 36 more disposals than the Blues and the Inside 50 count is 63-50 in the Dogs favour. One area where Carlton will look to take advantage is the ruck with a 33-15 advantage on the season.

Prediction and Tips

Carlton are more than capable of surprising the Western Bulldogs on Sunday and the three-goal head-start looks a good way to go.
