2018/19 NBA Betting Tips - 3 best bets for the NBA season

  • 3 Best bets for the 2018/19 NBA season
  • Bets included MVP and Rookie of the year

With all the major off-season signings done, our resident NBA expert looks ahead for some value future bets that will pay off later in the 2018/19 NBA season. These include MVP winner and Rookie of the year.

There are plenty of questions that will be answered in the upcoming season. How will LeBron go as a Laker? How good will the Celtics be with the return of Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward? Will Kawhi Leonard play in Toronto?. Whatever the result, It’s sure to be a fun season.

Eastern Conference Winner

For the first time in eight years, LeBron James will not be going to the Eastern Conference Finals. This is terrific news for the likes of the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76’ers and Toronto Raptors, all of which will get a chance to make it to the NBA finals in 2019. The team I want to be putting money on is the Boston Celtics. The Celtics would’ve been favourites for the Eastern Conference even if James had’ve stayed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics pushed the Cavs to a Game 7 without Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward. Not surprisingly, the moment got to the likes of Terry Rozier, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, as they missed open jumpshots that cost them the deciding game. In 2017, the Celtics would return only four guys from the previous year’s squad of 15. This season they return 13 and get back All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward from injury. The likes of Tatum and Brown have gained invaluable playoff experience and will be a force next season. The Sixers have kept their roster almost unchanged whilst the Raptors have traded DeMar DeRozan for Kawhi Leonard. Neither is enough to move the needle and the Boston Celtics should be winning the Eastern Conference.

MVP

My usual MVP betting strategy is finding a player with a chip on their shoulder. Two seasons ago it was Russell Westbrook, with superstar partner Kevin Durant stating he didn’t want to play with Westbrook, the latter played angry for all 82 games and won MVP. Last season it was James Harden, Harden felt robbed, finishing as the runner-up the past two years running. Coming off a failure in the playoffs, Harden had all the motivation he needed, clearly winning the MVP. This year, my pick is New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis. AD paired up with Boogie Cousins and the two were just starting to find their rhythm last season when Cousins went down with a season-ending Achilles injury. Davis wore Cousins’ jersey in the All-Star game as a show of respect for his teammate. Only a few weeks ago, Cousins shocked the NBA, taking a $20 million pay cut to join the Golden State Warriors. Davis has since said It’s all business, however, he is sure to have something to prove and I’d be shocked if he wasn’t in the MVP race for the entire season.

Rookie of the Year

The New York Knicks weren’t happy on draft night. With Michael Porter Jr. slipping down the draft board, it was expected that the Knicks would take a chance on him with their ninth pick. That didn’t happen and the Knicks instead went with Kevin Knox. Well in a few short months, Knox is now my Rookie of the year pick. I didn’t know much about Knox coming out of his time at Kentucky but he impressed me at Summer League. Knox averaged 23.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in his first three games and showed attributes that could see him become a star in the NBA. At 6’9” he has an elite quickness that can see him shake defenders and get to the basket. He is a streaky shooter, with consistency something that I’m sure Knox will work. Most importantly, he can handle the pressure. From what I’ve read about Knox, he is a gym rat and a hard worker from a family background, all things I’m looking for in potential rookies of the year. At upwards of 10/1, I’m happy to be with Knox over the more hyped prospects.
