Australia is set to take on Spain in a Semi-Final match at the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

The Boomers cruised past the Czech Republic 82-70 and once again it was Patty Mills who was named Player of the Game. Mills scored 24 points on 9-15 shooting, including 6-9 from range and he also had six assists. Chris Goulding had 14 points and Andrew Bogut scored 10 in a little over 12 minutes of play; Bogut also had three blocks in that time.

They will meet Spain who come off a 90-78 win over Poland in their Quarter Final match. Ricky Rubio scored 19 points and dished out nine assists. Willy Hernangomez Geuer scored 18 for the game and Rudy Fernandez netted 16.

Tournament favourites the USA were eliminated by France in a shock result which leaves the door open for France, Argentina, Spain or Australia to win the FIBA World Cup. The gold medal has gone to the USA in the past two tournaments (2010 and 2014) but now it is time for a new country to emerge victorious.

The Semi Final match between Spain and Australia will take place on Friday night at 6:00pm AEST.

Spain’s road to the Semi Finals has seen them unbeaten with wins over:

Tunisia: 101-62
Puerto Rico: 73-63
Iran: 73-65
Italy: 67-60
Serbia: 81-69
Poland: 90-78

The Boomers are also unbeaten throughout the tournament and were victorious over France who just eliminated the USA as mentioned earlier.

It may sound like a broken record, but Mills will be pivotal for the Boomers to defeat the Spanish team. He is averaging 22.2 points per game and shooting 51.2% from the field. He is 40.5% from three-point range and 90.3% from the charity stripe. Outside of Mills, the Boomers will be relying on the likes of Joe Ingles, Matthew Dellavedova, Aron Baynes, Jock Landale, Chris Goulding and Andrew Bogut to play well in order to topple the Spaniards.

Dellavedova is only shooting 37.3% which is concerning. His playmaking has been far better averaging 6 assists per game. Ingles is averaging 5.8 assists and 5.7 rebounds to go with his 10.5 points per game.

Rubio and Marc Gasol should lead from the front for Spain with Rubio averaging 15.3 points, 5.5 assists and 1.3 steals. Gasol’s averages are 11.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.7 blocks.

In addition to that duo, Spain has plenty of depth with Rudy Fernandez, Victor Claver, Juancho Hernangomez and Sergio Llull all capable of scoring the basketball.

The Boomers will need to protect the ball because Spain have four players averaging more than one steal per game and the team averages 8.5 compared to Australia’s 5.0 per game.

This should be a tight contest that could go either way. We are predicting Spain by six points in the end to advance to another final; they claimed the 2006 tournament.
