Big Bets Post Mortem - See how the big bets fared on the weekend

  • Happy days for many big bet punters as the Kingstown Town Stakes goes their way
Big Bets Post Mortem

In total contrast to last week, this week it was a true case of the ‘big bet punters bounce back’ as they savaged the bagmen in a weekend of wins.

Last week, most punters found themselves badly burnt when the Winterbottom favourite (Viddora) finished nearer last than first.

However, the pain was short lived as Ascot was turned into a ballroom of joy for many of the big bet punters last Saturday when Willy Pike steered the heavily backed ARCADIA QUEEN to a big win in the Group One Kingston Town Classic, sending many of the bagmen running for cover.

The Pierro filly used all of the mammoth 9kg (20lb) weight advantage she had on most of the field and turned it into a 4.5 length victory.

No less than eight big bet punters invested on the filly with a total of more than $39,000 riding with William Pike, including one single wager of $10,000 @ $2.50 which turned into a pick-up of $25,000.

Meanwhile, across the Nullarbor, we saw the best backed runner of the day at Pakenham also salute with MR QUICKIE saluting in the fourth of the day and he did it the hard way as well.

Drawn out in gate 13 (of 15), and trapped three-deep the entire trip, he still got to the line first which saw three big bet punters a little happier than they were before the race. A total of $9,000 was invested on the Weir-trained three-year-old.

Up in Sydney, the bagmen took a big blow when the Bjorn Baker-trained IRITHEA took out the fifth race of the day. One happy punter had $7,000 @ $5 which secured their next overseas holiday.

In Brisbane, the scene was identical at Doomben with the well supported AWESOME PLUCK taking the honours in the last of the day. The dual-acceptor (Race 4) destroyed his opposition giving his backers no cause for alarm as he put almost four lengths on the field. One big bet punter outlaid $3,000 and secured $3.40 fixed.
