Big Bets Post Mortem - See how the big bets fared on the weekend

  • The Bagmen bellowed as punters were pounded on the weekend
Big Bets Post Mortem

It was a weekend for the bagmen as punters saw very little joy around the country.

Many of the market movers failed to deliver leaving a dampener on Christmas cheer. At Flemington, only a couple of big bet punters finished the day ahead which was surprising as four of the nine favourites saluted and only one winner started in double figures.

The day started badly for two big bet punters when race favourite HAWKSHOT finished unplaced in the second of the day. $4,500 in total went west there as the Darren Weir-trained three-year-old couldn’t finish off down the Flemington straight course.

Punters saw some joy in race six where veteran rider Damien Oliver booted home race favourite ORDER OF COMMAND at the expense of DEMOLITION who was also well supported. One lucky punter locked in $4.20 for their $3,000 investment which proved a master stroke as the Danny O’Brien-trained gelding was sent out a very warm elect at $2.25.

Punters felt the most pain in the last of the day where no less than eight big bet punters had their hard-earned riding on race favourite MASTERING who beat home all but the fast finishing (equal) second favourite Usain Bowler.

More than $30,000 in total was riding on the Smart Missile gelding including one single bet of $15,000.

The picture at Warwick Farm was even gloomier where all big bet punters went home with empty pockets.

The most pain was felt in the last of the day where topweight BON AMIS finished unplaced. Four big bet punters outlaid a total of $19,000 including a single bet of $10,000 on the Bon Hoffa gelding.

The grand opening of Eagle Farm turned out to be not so grand for most big bet punters with MAYBE MARKLE  and BAT A KAT both finishing unplaced, the latter coming in last.
