Big Bets Post Mortem

Sad news and shocks dominated racing over the weekend.

We sadly mourned the loss of leading sire Sebring who left us way too soon at just 13 years of age.

On the tracks, it was (mostly) a case of odds-on, look-on as several red-hot chances were beaten. Then, arguably the biggest surprise of the day was the win of Red Cardinal for his new trainer Kris Lees.

An inheritance from the now defunct Darren Weir stables, the former overseas galloper won his first race since landing on Australian soil more than 16 months ago.

Backers of the (til now) out-of-form stayer could probably think they were hard done by with $26 being the best on offer for the seven-year-old who, last start, finished 70 lengths behind Cross Counter in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

As for the ‘red-hot’ brigade on Saturday, things got off to a bad start for the short-priced favourite backers when Raay Of Dreams finished second in a five-horse field in the first of the day at Eagle Farm. Easing from red figures to start at $2.15, he was struggling at the 200m mark and was lucky to take home second prize with Sizzling Babe breathing down his neck a head back in third place.

South of the border, things were much better at Rosehill with the first race favourite Burning Crown ($2.40) beaten out of a place.

The run of outs continued in the very next race where Golden Slipper favourite TASSORT ($1.85) was comprehensively beaten by Time To Reign. One big bet punter had $3,000 @ $1.80, while TAB.com reported taking several bets of $2,000 at $1.85. Despite the loss, Tassort remains a $4.50 favourite for the Golden Slipper with TAB.com.

SEAWAY turned things around for the big bet punters winning the fourth of the day. Sent out a $22.5 favourite, he did it comfortably in the end. One punter took the skinny odds of $1.80 for their $2,500 investment while TAB.com took bets of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 all at $2.20.

Punters remained on top next race when THE AUTUMN SUN defied his ordinary trial effort and ran down Vegadaze to grab the win on the line. One big bet punter was happy to see the victory after outlaying $40,000 @ $1.50 while TAB.com report other bets of $18,000 and $10,000 @ $1.55.

Meanwhile at Caulfield, punters were off to a good start when SIKANDARABAD won the first as a $3.40 favourite. TAB.com reported taking bets of $15,000 AND $7,500 @ $2.

It was a dry run from there until race 5 where most thought the heavily backed favourite ZOUSAIN would end the drought of losing favourites. However, all he did was add to it as the Chris Waller-trained colt was left out in the cold on the run to the line as Terbium left the favourite behind to win comfortably and remain unbeaten after four starts.

Some big bets were placed on the Zoustar youngster with $8,000 in total reported big bets going down. Another single bet of $37,250 @ $1.50 was taken by TAB.com

Grumbles turned to cheers just 45 minutes later as the well backed ALIZEE did enough to win the Group One Futurity Stakes. Big bet punters rallied behind the Godolphin mare with a total of $11,500 invested on her success.
