Big Bets Post Mortem - See how the big bets fared on the weekend

  • Bookies clean-up despite The Autumn Sun victory
  • But quaddie takers clean-up in Melbourne
Big Bets Post Mortem

Bookies will be skipping all the way to the bank this morning after what turned out to be a disastrous weekend for punters, unless you were one of the lucky ‘quaddie takers’ at Flemington.

For big bet punters, unless you had a ticket in your hand that read ‘The Autumn Sun’, all but one ended the day in the poor house.

It was Guineas Day at Randwick where the day started poorly for punters. Despite easing from $4.80 to $7, two big bet punters put their hopes on SANDBAR to win the second of the day. Unfortunately, the Snitzel colt finished second-last leaving those two punters to wave goodbye to their $10,000 bets. TAB also reported a bet of $5,000 each-way on Sandbar @ $6 and $2.20.

Punters then focussed on the Group Two Todman Stakes with investments of $3,000 @ $3.10 and $2,500 @ $3 riding on race favourite TIME TO REIGN, alas, he too suffered a similar fate to Sandbar, finishing unplaced behind Yes Yes Yes. TAB reported two separate bets of $4,000 on the Gary Portelli-trained colt.

Then came the only shining light of the day for punters at Randwick, when THE AUTUMN SUN came from a near impossible position to snatch victory in the Group One Randwick Guineas. Big bet punters breathed a sigh of relief as the Redoute’s Choice colt grabbed the win right on the line. Reported big bets totalling $62,000 turned over a profit for punters.

TAB held bets totalling more than $170,000 on the Chris Waller-trained colt including a single ‘place’ bet of $30,000 @ $1.10.

Meanwhile at Flemington, the scene wasn’t much different for big bet punters where not a single favourite saluted on the nine-race program.

The bad luck began in the third of the day where favourite, THUNDER CLOUD finished third behind second elect Hang Man. Two big bets totalling $10,500 went down in the process.

Then came the first of the Group One’s with OSBORNE BULLS well supported as favourite for the Newmarket Hcp. Big Bets totalling $10,500 were lost as the gallant Godolphin gelding finished fast but arrived too late to run down Sunlight on the line.
TAB reported a late investment of $10,000 on the Godolphin five-year-old.

All hopes were then drawn to the heavily backed AVILIUS in the Group One Australian Cup. However, the bookies were left to cheer yet again as the James Cummings-trained gelding failed to fire in the run home. A total of $43,000 was reportedly invested on the $1.65 favourite with TAB also reporting a ‘place’ bet taken for $7,800 @ $1.16.

Only one big bet punter at Flemington finished the day with a smile. The $5,000 @ $4.40 turned into a $22,000 collect on SPANISH REEF in the last of the day and apart from The Autumn Sun in Sydney, the only reason for any big bet punter to cheer. TAB also reported specking on the Lope De Vega mare with a $2,500 bet @ $4.80 and another bet of $2,000 x $10,000 each-way bet at $5.50 and $2.

On a brighter note for punters, there smiles all round for several 'quaddie players' with the Flemington quadrella paying a dividend of  $62,404.60 on the Victorian tote, thanks mainly to Harlem taking out the Australian Cup at $31 and Sunlight winning the Newmarket at $13. Several winning tickets were reported by TAB with one single winner taking a multi-selection flexi bet of $40 to collect   $30,815.40. Another single ticket outlaid $50 as a flexi bet and collected  $13,000.94.
