Big Bets Post Mortem - See how the big bets fared on the weekend

  • Winx smashes all betting records
  • One punter cleans-up on Avantage

Big Bets Post Mortem

Taking out the obvious two, and punters didn’t have much to cheer about on Saturday…..

We’ll get to the aftermath of the day shortly, but first, let’s take a look at what (or should I say, how much) changed hands over the biggest two drawcards of the day, namely Winx and The Autumn Sun.

WINX keeps breaking records both on and off the track and investments on her success just keep on increasing. There was already a huge amount of money riding on her to win the Group One George Ryder Stakes (as is evidenced in the chart below).

However, TAB reported some last-minute investments that saw holdings on the great mare almost topple $3 million, with $1.8 million placed on race day alone.

On top of what you see listed below, TAB accepted single bets of $230,000 and another at $259,000 both @ $1.06. These bets netted $13,800 and $15,540 respectively.

But the big one was taken as the George Ryder field was loading. One big bet punter reportedly had a single bet of $345,000 @ $1.05 which returned a profit of $17,250.
The grand lady of the turf really stole the day.

Meanwhile, THE AUTUMN SUN had his fair share of investors as well. On top of the investments listed below, TAB reported further bets taken on the day.

Single bets of $150,000 @ $1.42, $100,000 @ $1.33 and $53,000 @ $1.40 were taken which saw the total of all fixed price bets on the Chris Waller-trained colt total out at just over $922,000 with TAB.

Other bets of further interest were a couple of two-leg multis.

A bet of $15,000 @ $1.50 on The Autumn Sun into Winx returned $22,500 with another multi on the same horses of $10,000 @ $1.62 saw a collect of $16,200.

Now for the rest of the day….

All reported big bets taken were placed on the Rosehill meeting, which is a rare event in itself. However, only a couple of punters had reason to smile with most other big bets going down on Saturday.

The day got off to a great start for one punter who stuck by AVANTAGE and reaped the rewards in the process. The NZ visitor opened a $3.50 favourite when markets were released last Wednesday but the Fastnet Rock filly continually drifted before starting a $5.50 second pick behind Resin. The $10,000 wager on Avantage returned $48,000 for that one wager. TAB reported several other $1,000 bets at $5.

The tide turned in the next race when even-money favourite CLASSIQUE LEGEND could only manage third place behind Krone. One big bet punter took red figures as he outlaid $8,000 @ $1.90 on the Les Bridge-trained gelding.

Bigger losses were yet to come in race three as the heavily supported SHRAAOH    finished third in the Group Three Manion Cup. Big bets totalling $14,000 stayed with the bagman as the Chris Waller-trained gelding finished three lengths behind race winner Midterm.

The biggest money-spinner in the Golden Slipper was without doubt the Godolphin filly TENLEY who prior to the big race was two from two and had punters swarming to the $6 on offer, despite having no form at all on wet tracks.

Well, as we now know, wet tracks are not her forte as she finished a distant second-last, more than 13 lengths behind her winning stablemate KIAMICHI.

One reported big bet of $4,000 @ the $6 quote was placed however TAB reported several other big bets, including one of $6,000 @ $6, which saw the grey filly hold the majority of the pool at 20% of all bets placed.

Winning bets on AVILIUS and NATURE STRIP softened the blow for some big bet punters but most went home at least slightly wounded on the punt for the day.
