Big Bets Post Mortem

A sprinkling of winners made it a joyous weekend for some big bet punters.

Day one of the Championships was a Group racing bonanza where nine of the ten events were Group listed plus the Country Championships Final worth $500,000 was also a featured on the card and big bet punters came from everywhere to enjoy the spoils of the day.

The day kicked off with plenty of interest in the first of the day with four big bet punters outlaying a total of $16,500 on the James Cummings-trained filly ATHIRI only to be upstaged by her stablemate BIVOUAC, who had his share of support as well.

TAB reported bets on the day of $1,000 @ $5, $1,500 @ $4.80, $2,000 @ $4.60 and $1,000 @ $4.60 on the Exceed And Excel colt with Cummings’ father Anthony providing the trifecta with Libertini splitting the Godolphin pair to grab second place.

All the rage in the Country Championships final was NOBLE BOY who had a magnitude of support in the race. TAB reported 60% of the total investment was being carried by the race favourite as further bets were taken on the day.

An unusual bet of $9,524 was among the total of $16,524 reported on Noble Boy to win. However, TAB reported several other bets taken on race day including one of $30,000 @ $3 riding on the Bon Hoffa gelding.

The Sires’ Produce was the first if the Group Ones for the day with LOVING GABY the only reported big bet being taken. The $4.20 favourite finished a very close second to Godolphin-owned MICROPHONE who enjoyed plenty of support with TAB. Bets of $5,000 @ $5, $2,000 @ $5 twice and $3,000 @ $4.80 were taken on race day. Another late bet of $30,000 @ $5.50 was accepted on BELLEVUE HILL who finished mid-field in the event.

The Group One Australian Derby was the next event and one big bet punter put their faith in the Dundeel colt GLOBAL EXCHANGE with a $10,000 bet @ $12 riding on him. The $12 on offer turned out to be very generous with the three-year-old grey starting a $5.50 equal favourite (with Chapada), but unfortunately, he finished down the track behind the $15 winner ANGEL OF TRUTH who came in for some attention on the day with TAB.

One bet of $600 @ $17 and another of $500 @ $17 were taken on the Animal Kingdom gelding while a bet of $30,000 was also taken on co-equal favourite CHAPADA.

Along came the Group One TJ Smith Stakes and there were some loyal SANTA ANA LANE fans who left the track with smiles on their faces. One big bet punter outlaid $5,000 @ $7 on the Anthony Freedman-trained gelding while TAB reported bets of $2,000 @ $7 and $1,200 @ $7.50 being accepted.

The biggest losers in the race were spread all over the shop with PIERATA holding two bets of $30,000, TRAPEZE ARTIST with one bet of $20,000 @ $5 and race favourite OSBORNE BULLS was also well supported with TAB taking bets of $10,000 @ $4.60, $30,000 @ $4.40, $20,000 @ $4.20, $5,000 @ $4 and $4,000 @ $4.

The Doncaster Mile was the last of the Group One races for the day and it didn’t go without support either.

Race favourite BRUTAL had his share of supporters with one big bet punter securing $7 fixed for their $3,000 investment. TAB reported bets of $2,000 @ $7 twice and $2,000 e/w @ $6.50/$2.60.

The ever-consistent HARTNELL had his followers as well with TAB reporting bets of $4,000 @ $10, $5,000 @ $8 and $2,000 @ $7 taken twice.

Meanwhile, down south at Caulfield the biggest plunge of the day was on the Phillip Stokes-trained MR QUICKIE where three big bet punters outlaid a total of $15,300 on the Shamus Award gelding, only to see him beaten a whisker by $10 chance Grinzinger Star. The TAB took bets of $3,900 @ $1.60, $2,700 @ $1.60, $2,000 @ $1.60 multiple times plus one bet of $25,000 @ $1.10 for the place.
