Big Bets Post Mortem

Punters were pounded at Rosehill on the weekend while they finished in front on the day at Caulfield.

Several big bet punters are probably wishing they went each-way with their wagers with a swag of bets finishing in the minor money.

The sole big bet punter at Rosehill has race two favourite WIMLAH covered and did well to take the early fixed odds. A $2,000 wager @ $6 paid off nicely as the Tulloch Lodge mare was sent to the barriers at $3.50.

The big market mover in the same race was the John Thompson-trained LE LUDE who was backed in from $16 to start a $6.50 chance. One big bet punter secured a wager of $1,000 @ $36, but all punters who invested on the four-year-old mare had to witness race favourite Wimlah beat her home by a length.

The San Domenico Stakes result came as no surprise to many as, yet again, we witnessed a small field (of five) and the white-hot favourite getting rolled. The James Cummings-trained BIVOUAC was sent out at the skinny odds of $1.35, but was convincingly beaten by Exceedance from the Team Hawkes stable.

Big bets totalling $17,800 were riding on Bivouac along with bets of $5,000 @ $1.35 and $3,000 @ $1.35 taken by the TAB

The place to be (for big bet punters) was Caulfield where four favourites were successful on the day.

Punters patiently waited until the third of the day where they let fly on race favourite MY PENDANT who didn’t disappoint. The Danny O’Brien-trained mare was steered to victory by veteran ace Damien Oliver.

Two big bets of $5,000 @ $2.15 and another of $5,000 @ $2.60 were taken, while the TAB reported wagers of $3,000 @ $2.25, $3,000 @ $2.25, $3,000 @ $2.20, $3,000 @ $2.10 and $9,000 @ $2 on the Pins mare.

Punters then cleaned up in the seventh of the day when the Team Meagher-trained PIPPIE saluted. Big bets of $3,000 @ $2.90, $4,800 @ $2.80 and $8,000 @ $2.70 had the bagmen back-peddling. The TAB fared no better, reportedly taking bets of $2,200 @ $2.50, $2,000 @ $2.20 multiple times, $4,000 @ $2.15 and $2,000 @ $2.10 multiple times as well.

In the same race, since markets opened, Sylvia’s Mother blew like the wind and at one stage, $4.40 was freely available. Punters who remained loyal to the Team Hawkes mare had to settle for third place with the TAB taking bets of $5,000 @ $4.20, $4,500 x $4,000 e/w @ $4.20/$1.55.

The ALIZEE fans were left disappointed as the Godolphin mare finished third to the well-backed SCALES OF JUSTICE. Support ended up split between the two runners with Alizee firming from $3.40 to $2.70 and Scales Of Justice also firming from $5 to $3.70.

Big bet punters weren’t all that keen on the race favourite, where only two big bets were wagered, one of $5,000 @ $3.20 and another of $10,000 @ $3.20. The TAB on the other hand, took many more, including bets of $5,000 e/w @ $3.30/$1.55, $5,000 x $10,000 e/w @ $3.20/$1.55, $5,000 @ $3.20, $5,000 @ $3.10, $10,000 @ $3, $5,000 @ $3, $3,500 @ $2.90, $2,500 @ $2.90, $2,000 @ $2.90, $3,000 @ $2.80 and $2,500 @ $2.70.

One big bet punter got in early and had $2,500 @ $7 on Scales Of Justice while the TAB were holding many more including $1,000 @ $5 TWICE, $1,000 @ $4 several times, $2,500 @ $3.90, $1,035 @ $3.90, $1,000 @ $3.90 and $1,000 @ $3.80 multiple times.
