Our expert previews each race on Caulfield Cup Day including the big feature, which is Race 8 of the afternoon at 4.40pm.

Race 1 - 12:15PM QMS MEDIA PLATE (1400 METRES)
Darren Weir has a great knack of bringing horses through their grades and this is a nice step for DELUSIONS who comes off an impressive 3.7-length victory in a 1200m maiden Swan Hill. The So You Think filly maps to sit outside the lead and can prove too strong over the concluding stages with her superior closing speed. Step up in trip and 3.5kg less this time around is a big advantage.

2nd – Khulaasa
3rd – Zizzis
4th – Mutheera

Race 2 - 12:50PM POLYTRACK GOTHIC STAKES (1400 METRES)
It’s redemption time as RANIER goes around here after being a tragedy beaten last start when blocked for a run for most of the straight until flashing home when clear at the 50m mark. He meets Wild Planet 2.5kg better at the weights and is drawn for a soft run behind the speed. Hugh Bowman was called into the stewards’ room for the patient ride last time and he’ll be keen to make amends.

2nd – Wild Planet
3rd – Yulong January
4th – Kaplumpich

Race 3 - 1:25PM MCCAFE CAULFIELD SPRINT (1000 METRES)
I’ve been with Bons Away in both runs this campaign, but EDUARDO has beat him home on both occasions and now meets him 4kg better at the weights, while also meeting Spending To Win 1.5kg better after that galloper edged him out two starts back. The wide barrier is a concern if a few decide to kick up and hold him out, but it’s unlikely and he maps to either lead or sit outside the leader. Weight gives him the advantage here as they go hell for leather over the shorter sprint trip.

2nd – Spending To Win
3rd – Bons Away
4th – Quilista

Race 4 - 2:00PM CARLTON DRAUGHT ALINGHI STAKES (1100 METRES)
Going for one at big odds here. The form around Grey Shadow is strong as she was an impressive winner over Fragonard and Miss Leonidas last start when stepping up from BM70 grade to a BM90. WORKING FROM HOME was beaten 3.5 lengths in that event when weakening late, but she improves with a run under the belt and is unbeaten second-up. She meets Grey Shadow 2.5kg better at the weights and will take some beating from up on the speed. Soothing also meets Grey Shadow 4.5kg better at the weights, but she had the benefit of fitness and I think Working From Home has more upside.

2nd – Soothing
3rd – Grey Shadow
4th – From Within

Race 5 - 2:35PM NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK ETHEREAL STAKES (2000 METRES)
Another cracking chance at big odds with the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained RUBIRA looking to atone following a luckless run in the Edward Manifold (1600m) behind subsequent Thousand Guineas winner Amphitrite. Rubira settle in a nice position three pairs back but was blocked for a run for most of the straight and looked to have something to offer. She peaked third-up last campaign when winning the Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Pukekura, and she looks like the step up to 2000m will suit. She should land in the prime spot, one out and one back, and with clear running in the straight, she can surprise at big odds.

2nd – Verry Elleegant
3rd – Greysful Glamour
4th – Yulong Meteor

Race 6 - 3:10PM LADBROKES CLASSIC (2000 METRES)
EXTRA BRUT rates as one of the best bets on the programme following his utterly dominant win in the UCI Stakes (1800m) last start. Thinkin’ Big was 3rd in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), and although his previous run in the Gloaming Stakes (1800m) was at Rosehill, I can’t ignore the fact that Extra Brut went nearly 12 lengths quicker over that trip at Flemington. Dealmaker disappointed in the Spring Champion, but he has a brilliant turn of foot and could challenge with the right run.

2nd – Dealmaker
3rd – Thinkin’ Big
4th – Louie The Legend

Race 7 - 3:50PM LADBROKES COONGY CUP (2000 METRES)
I think MAHAMEDEIS ($17) is at ridiculous odds here while Best Of Days is the $3.40 favourite. Best Of Days couldn’t run down Furrion at level weights last start but had every chance, and last campaign, Mahamedeis was 3rd behind Lucky For All and Furrion at this track and trip when carrying more weight that the Weir pair. He was very impressive beating Royal Ace at Moonee Valley where they ran quick time, and with just 54kg around Caulfield over 2000m this time, he can surprise at big odds.

2nd – Best Of Days
3rd – Trap For Fools
4th – Life Less Ordinary

Race 8 - 4:40PM STELLA ARTOIS CAULFIELD CUP (2400 METRES)

1st – Youngstar
2nd – Night’s Watch
3rd – Kings Will Dream
4th – Best Solution

Race 9 - 5:15PM SCHWEPPES TRISTARC STAKES (1400 METRES)
Hard to go past INVINCIBELLA who meets Savatiano half a kilo better at the weights after beating that mare by 2.5 lengths last start. She also beats Shumookh 2.5kg better after narrowly losing to that mare two starts back. Booker looks the likely danger after a much-improved effort last start when finishing 2nd to Winter Bride.

2nd – Booker
3rd – Shumookh
4th – Savatiano

Race 10 - 5:50PM LADBROKES MOONGA STAKES (1400 METRES)
Sticking with SIRCCONI who I tipped last start and looked a bit unlucky being held up while Iconoclasm had built momentum and was off and gone. This gelding needs to be out and rolling early, and with two runs under his belt this time in, he’ll prove hard to catch now that Linda Meech can use his fitness to advantage.

2nd – Dreamforce
3rd – Mr Sneaky
4th – Tom Melbourne
