Friday 16 February

CANTERBURY

Race 1 No. 4 Kookabaa (1550m) 18:02pm - Rosehill trials January 22
Note: finished 4th and 3rd since trial
KOOKABAA: is a maiden with Chris Waller but won’t be one for long. Was cantering 3 deep all way, and went to the line under his own steam to claim a 1030m trial.

MOONEE VALLEY

Race 1 No. 9 Lady Bithiah (1000m) 18:02pm - Tatura trials January 16
Note: very disappointing first-up but may have choked down and gets a tongue tie.
LADY BITHIAH brained them in the opening heat and the second quickest time of the nine 850m heats. Trained by Adrian Corboy at Wangaratta, the two-year-old daughter of Moshe was tested in the Maribyrnong Trial (1000m) at Flemington on debut but finished 15 lengths last before going for a break. She showed brilliant early speed to lead in the trial and then kicked clear to score comfortably while also being eased right down with 50m to go. Will certainly be winning races based on that performance.
Race 1 No. 10 Smart Style (1000m) 18:02pm - Cranbourne trials February 5
Tatiara may have won this heat by four lengths but I really like the way SMART STYLE hit the line from a long way back to grab 2nd place. The unraced Smart Missile filly travelled widest on the bend and really motored home out wide under the slightest urgings of jockey Regan Bayliss. Should be winning a maiden on debut judging by that effort.

Saturday 17 February

FLEMINGTON

Race 1 No. 2 Sanglier (1100m) 12:02pm - Flemington Jumpouts February 2nd
Black Caviar’s second foal Prince Of Caviar was the main attraction from this Jumpout. The Colt wasn’t asked for an effort and ran under his own steam to finish back in fifth. He is still entered for both the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper. The horse I want to be following from this Jumpout is the Godolphin horse SANGLIER. The two-year-old ran a nice third last start behind Long Leaf and Oohood at Sandown. He looks to have plenty of ability, travelling on-speed in this Jumpout before really extending away from the Tony Mcevoy-trained Roobeena who finished a length away in second with five-lengths back to third. Sanglier looks to have a bright future and is a horse I want to be following moving forward.
Race 1 No. 9 Nuclear Blitz (1100m) 12:02pm - Flemington Jumpouts February 2nd
The performance in this Jumpout from the unraced NUCLEAR BLITZ was breathtaking. The two-year-old Sepoy Filly is trained by the Hawkes team and she looks a real talent. She tracked down the outside fence and was on the bit and travelling for the entire 800m. Plenty of horses were under pressure inside the final 150m, with the horse on her inside under the whip to go with her over the final 100m. Nuclear Blitz still won the Jumpout untouched, with three-lengths back to third. Horses down Jumpout much better and I’m very excited to see where the Hawkes place her, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her in a Stakes race on Debut. She is still nominated for the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper.

Race 7 No. 4 Main Stage (1400m) 16:02pm - Cranbourne trials February 5
The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained MAIN STAGE was a standout in the opening heat and looks to have come back in great order. He settled in the second half of the field and was never asked to extend but worked home strongly down the outside to grab 2nd. Does his best racing at Flemington and may need a couple of runs but he seemed forward enough to be sticking with him in anything over a mile and beyond.

Race 8 No. 3 Hey Doc (1000m) 16:02pm - Flemington Jumpouts February 2nd
An extremely classy Jumpout to start proceedings at Flemington on Friday Morning. This Jumpout included Group One winners Redkirk Warrior and Hey Doc. Redkirk Warrior had the blinkers on and that proved key, he looked very bright with them on, jumping well and landing in front. He was asked for an effort with about 75m remaining and won the Jumpout by a length. The horse that is going in the blackbook however, is the Tony McEvoy-trained HEY DOC. I was super impressed with his effort and how sharp he looked for a Jumpout in early February. Jockey Luke Currie had a good hold of him to the line, finishing a length behind Redkirk Warrior with five-lengths to the third-placed runner. He looks ready to run a very big race first-up in the Lightning Stakes in a fortnight's time.
Race 8 No. 8 Missrock (1000m) 16:02pm - Cranbourne trials February 5
A nice trial by MISSROCK who finished off well to grab 3rd and was hard held toward the line. She has a great fresh record of four wins from five fresh attempts so it may pay to follow her in again at her first run this preparation.

RANDWICK

Race 2 No. 5 Exceltic (1100m) 13:02pm - Randwick trials December 29
Note: finished 3rd in Group 3 Canonbury Stakes on debut – has upside.
One thing was clear in this heat - trainer Gary Portelli wanted EXCELTIC to win. The unraced Excelebration colt was snagged back to last by Tye Angland where he settled along the rail. Entering the straight he was trapped behind a wall of horses so Angland switched him around four sets of heels and got him to the outside where he rounded them up in the final 75m.

Race 3 No. 10 Ready for Success (2000m) 14:02pm - Rosehill trials January 22
Note: finished 3rd first-up.
READY FOR SUCCESS: gee the way this restricted class stayer hit the line would suggest only one thing - he's back and back better than last time where he won a BM 80 at Warwick Farm. Watch for him about 3rd up.

Race 6 No. 3 Endless Drama (1400m) 16:02pm - Rosehill trials January 8
Note: finished 3rd in Carrington Stakes first-up.
ENDLESS DRAMA is yet to win in Australia but was Group 2 placed among three disappointing runs in Group 1 races. He settled off the pace and cantered up to take the lead on the home turn before winning comfortably in good time. Always trials well but this was his best piece of work and he should be breaking through this time.

Tuesday 20 February

WYONG

Race 3 No. 7 Laburnum (1350m) 14:02pm - Rosehill trials January 22
LABURNUM (Denman-Runes) sat wide and was held back from extending when beaten less than 3 lengths in debut trial. May need another run, but has talent as she was under restraint late.

Horse Racing Bet Types

There are a number of ways to bet on horse racing from a standard win or place bet to quadrellas and multibets.

SINGLE: The most common bet. The single bet involves betting on your selection to win, place, or both (each-way). If betting each-way (see our guide for what an each-way bet is), the stake is doubled as you are betting on your selection to win, and also to place.

QUINELLA: A Quinella bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least three or more runners. To win a Quinella, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in any order

EXACTA: An exacta is exactly the same as a quinella. However, you must successfully predict the 1st and 2nd placegetters in the correct order

TRIFECTA: A Trifecta bet is available on every thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a Trifecta, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in a given race.

FIRST4: A First4 bet is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race provided there are at least four or more runners. To win a First4, you must successfully predict the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placegetters in a given race.

MYSTERY BET: A Mystery Bet takes the guess work out of picking a Trifecta and is generated by the betting agency’s computer. The computer system will randomly select three runners and if they fill the placings you win the Trifecta.

QUADDIE: A Quaddie bet, or Quadrella bet as it is fully known, is available on most thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings. A quaddie is betting on the winners of four nominated races, which are typically the last four races of any meeting, and is a very popular bet.

MULTIBET: Multibets offer a great way to secure big winning returns on your bets as you combine various bets into one, and are proving to be an extremely popular way to bet. A multibet combines any number of bets from two to 25 into one single bet and dramatically increases the odds.

PATENT BET: A Patent bet is similar to a three-leg multibet but is made up of seven separate bets: three singles, three doubles and a trio. Where a multibet requires all selections to win for a return, a patent bet will yield a return from just one winner.

ALL-IN BETTING: All-In betting involves a bookmaker offering fixed odds on selected feature races prior to the declaration of the final field. All-In betting on the Melbourne Cup, for example, is available for the better part of 12 months leading into the event. The risk with All-In Betting is that you will not receive your stake back if your horse is scratched.
