Adelaide Strikers v Melbourne Stars BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Strikers have a slight edge

Jake Weatherald of the Strikers

Only net run rate differentiates defending champions Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League season ahead of their match at Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Both sides have three wins each and will be desperate to maintain their push for a playoffs spot.

One factor that may prove vital in the game is that when this match starts, the Strikers will not have not played a game for five days while the Stars played only a couple of days ago.

Adelaide Strikers

The champions will dearly miss Alex Carey (162 runs, SR 113.28), Billy Stanlake (seven wickets) and Peter Siddle (four wickets, ER 4.88) due to their international commitments. That could prove to be a hindrance, as all three have been at the forefront of Strikers’ campaign so far.

That means, it will be more responsibility for Jack Weatherald (203 runs, SR 138.09) with the bat and Rashid Khan (ten wickets, ER 4.91) with the ball. The biggest cheer will, however, be reserved for their captain Travis Head. The returning batsman could be the answer to Carey’s departure.

Melbourne Stars

The Stars saw their three-match winning streak broken by the Perth Scorchers. Those wins were orchestrated by Marcus Stoinis (146 runs, four wickets), who is out of this match on national duty. Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa are also missing due to national duty, leaving the Stars high and dry.

However, Nic Maddinson’s return from injury and Ben Dunk’s timely return to form are expected to bridge the gap. Nic Larkin (143 runs, SR 119.16) remains their surprise of the season and should continue to do so.

Match Up

The Strikers still remain top-heavy and will look to trump their visitors with quick runs at the beginning of the innings.

For the Stars, the return to form of Dwayne Bravo is a welcome sign, although they remain short of matchwinners.

Key Battles

There is very little time to adjust to the format change, but Head has always been excellent for the Strikers. With Carey gone, the onus is on Head to make sure that the Strikers stay ahead of the game.

Dunk has had a tough time in settling down with the Stars, so it is only natural to expect him to make up for the lost time now. With so much to prove, this could be Dunk’s chance to impress.

History & Statistics

Strikers have won three of their last four matches against the Stars.
Six of the seven H2H matches in the Big Bash have been won by the home side.
Three of the four H2H matches played in January have been won by the Stars.
Strikers have won three of the four H2H matches played at this venue.

Prediction

It is a tough game for both the sides, considering they have been weakened by the absence of Australian players on national duty. The Strikers seem to have the slightest of edges and may prevail in this contest.
