Adelaide Strikers v Perth Scorchers BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Scorchers to win wooden spoon battle

Perth Scorchers and the Adelaide Strikers

This was not how it was supposed to span out, but the last match of the regular season for Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers will decide the wooden spoon winner when they clash at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

The Strikers (W5, L8) are above the Scorchers, but with an inferior run-rate, they can be overtaken by their opponents. The fact that no side wants to finish last makes this a great game.

Adelaide Strikers

The defending champions have never lived up to their potential in BBL08. Coming into this game, the Strikers have lost five of their last six matches. It has been a season that has never taken off for the Strikers.

The absence of Travis Head for most part of the season was a challenge, so is the disappointing performance of their batters that has been a reason for their troubles. Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey have eventually joined the 300-run club, but it was a poor season. Only Rashid Khan (17 wickets, ER 6.19) has been the lone saving grace with the ball.

Perth Scorchers

The Scorchers are no different and have lost four of their last five matches coming into this. The most successful Big Bash franchise has struggled throughout and is now fighting to save itself from being the bottom of the ladder.

Only Ashton Turner (378 runs, SR 133.09) has been the shining beacon of their season. Andrew Tye has taken 16 wickets this season, but his economy rate has been unusually high at 8.36.

Match Up

The Strikers will be buoyed by the return of Head, but the return of Colin Ingram to South Africa weakens their squad. Still there is so much of talent in the side, and they can make one final dash.

The Scorchers could do with a win, just like their last game when they picked up a win. A lot will depend on how their batting will string together, but if it does they have a chance.

Key Battles

Head played just one home game in BBL08 and has scored a 43 off 31 balls against the Melbourne Stars. Making a comeback from the national side, where he got his maiden Test century, Head will look to make a signature statement here.

Up against him is Turner, who has just made it to the Australian ODI squad for the Indian tour. Back him to continue what has been a stellar season for him.

History & Statistics

  • The home side has won four of the last five H2H matches.
  • Scorchers have won the last four matches against the Strikers.
  • The overall record reads 8-5 in favour of the Scorchers.
  • Strikers have lost six of their seven matches against the Scorchers played at this venue.

Prediction

This game may not have the big attraction of a playoff place, but playing for the Jason Gillespie Trophy and the chance to avoid the wooden spoon is good enough for both the sides to compete hard. Expect a good game of tall scores and entertaining action.

Tips

Back the Scorchers to win @ $2.10 (BetEasy).

Back Carey to hit at least one six @ $2.20 (Ladbrokes).
