Afghanistan v New Zealand Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - Black Caps to remain unbeaten?

Afghanistan have shown courage and tenacity to run sides close in the ICC World Cup 2019, but have no wins to show for their effort ahead of their fixture against the unbeaten New Zealand side in Cardiff.

Weather will definitely be a question here, but should there be play, both the sides will look to iron out their chinks. Afghanistan have done well 80% of their games, only to falter at key moments. New Zealand have a lot to think about how they tackle the spinners.

Afghanistan

The Afghans have lost both their ODIs this World Cup so far, but that is not for lack of trying. They have displayed ample courage so far in both the games. By scoring 205 from being 77 for 5 against Australia and by limiting Sri Lanka from 144 for 1 to 201 all out, Afghanistan have good depth in all departments.

However, batting remains a big worry, as none of their batsmen have played to their potential. The lack of top-order partnerships has put more onus on Hashmatullah Shahidi, who remains their sole hope.

New Zealand

Even though they have picked up two wins, New Zealand will be disappointed with the manner of their victory over Bangladesh. Struggling to get going against the spinners, the Kiwi batsmen have shown that they are vulnerable to slow bowlers.

Bowling, however, remains spot on with comprehensive performances so far. The Kiwis have taken all 20 wickets to fall so far, and have conceded just 380 runs in eighty overs.

Match Up

Afghanistan will be worried about their continuous batting collapses. They haven’t been able to stitch together partnerships. Batting will be crucial, although the spinners would be salivating at the prospect of facing New Zealand.

The Kiwi batsmen will be tested out, but the form of Ross Taylor is a huge boost. New Zealand will be wary of their openers coming hard at the spinners without a proper plan.

History & Statistics

  • Afghanistan have lost seven of their eight matches in the World Cups.
  • The last time Afghanistan have lost three matches in a row was in March 2018.
  • New Zealand have won ten of their last 11 World Cup matches, with the loss in the 2015 WC Final remaining their only reverse.
  • New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by six wickets in the previous edition, their only ever H2H fixture.

Key Players

Mohammad Nabi has been the unsung hero for Afghanistan. Against Sri Lanka, he excelled with the ball and his performances will determine if they can pick up a surprise win.

Taylor has been the second-best batsman in the world after Virat Kohli, if you consider the runs scored post World Cup 2015. And, in his first match this tournament, Taylor got another half-century.
