Afghanistan v Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - Rivals seek first win

Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne

Losses in their opening matches of the World Cup openers give both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka a need to pick up points in their match at Cardiff on Tuesday.

Afghanistan can take credit for the way they performed against Australia, despite the fact that plaudits don’t translate to points. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, continued their downslide to put their struggles into perspective and show how far they are from finding a solution.

Afghanistan

Resilience and courage were on ample display from Afghanistan in their first match against Australia. However, they will be worried by their inability to bat out their quota, having played just 38.2 overs. Even their spinners proved ineffective, although they made Australia play nearly 35 overs in the chase.

Top-order batting remains a sore point, as the ‘hit and miss’ style of their openers isn’t helping them one bit. Rahmat Shah and Hasmatullah Shahidi will be expected to shoulder more responsibility with the bat, as does Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan with the ball.

Sri Lanka

Under a new captain and packing new hopes, Sri Lanka failed to tag along improved performances against New Zealand. In fact, a score of 136 all out in 29.2 overs and letting the Kiwis chase it down in 16.1 overs speak of their ineffective performances.

Sri Lanka have struggled with a top-order missing in action, and unless the seniors Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews pitch in, the Islanders could be in for huge disappointments. Bowling remains Lasith Malinga centric, but Sri Lanka will hope they can pick their game up against Afghanistan.

Match Up

It was an interesting game for Afghanistan against Australia. While they received plaudits for the way they fought back at various points, lack of patience remains their problem.

Sri Lanka have been in a bigger mess during their game against New Zealand. How quickly they can pick themselves up and rise up the charts will determine their chances in the game, which for now look remote.

History & Statistics

  • Afghanistan haven’t lost consecutive ODIs since March 2018 in the ICC World Cup qualifiers.
  • Afghanistan have won eight of their last 14 completed ODIs in neutral venues.
  • Sri Lanka have won nine of their last 14 World Cup games, including a win over Afghanistan in the last edition.
  • In four of the last five matches at this venue, the chasing side has won.

Key Players

Rashid Khan struck an impactful 27 off just 11 balls against Australia to underline his batting strength. However, it is with the ball that he will be required against Sri Lanka to improve his side’s chances.

Dimuth Karunaratne was the only saving grace for Sri Lanka in what was a disastrous game against the Kiwis. His patient 52* off 84 balls showed that he can be the answer to Sri Lanka’s batting woes.
