Before the 2019 ICC World Cup started, Afghanistan would have earmarked this game against West Indies at Headingley on Thursday as the best chance to pick up a win.

The game will have no bearing on the tournament, however, there is pride and bragging rights at stake for both the sides. Although this is a dead rubber for everyone else, Afghanistan and West Indies are sure to dish out a thrilling encounter.

Afghanistan

It has been a disastrous tournament for the Afghans, who have struggled to live up to their expectations. The passion and ambition that they usually show in their matches have been missing throughout. They had their moments against Sri Lanka, but failed to capitalise.

However, Afghanistan showed signs of getting back to their combative best in their last three games. They ran India close, before losing by 11 runs. Even in the game against Pakistan, Afghanistan were in the game until the last over, before losing by three wickets.

West Indies

After starting the tournament with a bang by defeating Pakistan, West Indies flattered to deceive. Just like Afghanistan, they had their moments in a number of games, only to miss out at key moments. Be it the loss to Australia (15 runs), New Zealand (five runs) or to Sri Lanka (23 runs), the Windies squandered many chances to pick up a win.

With the youngsters in the side showing good form, captain Jason Holder would expect to bow down on a high. Unless they can hold their own in key moments, the Windies won’t be able to sign off with a win.

Match Up

Unlike the dead rubbers, this game has a lot of context to it. Afghanistan and West Indies have been involved in some tight contests over the recent past. Tellingly, these sides met in the ICC qualifiers, where it was Afghanistan who came out on top. Though this result may not have a bearing on the top-four spots, Afghanistan and West Indies should play out a very tight match.

History & Statistics

  • Afghanistan have lost their last eight matches, their worst run in ODIs.
  • Afghanistan have won three of the five H2Hs (W3, L1, NR1), including the last two.
  • The last three H2H results favoured the chasing side.
  • West Indies have lost their last six completed ODIs.
  • West Indies have lost 11 of 16 completed ODIs in 2019.
  • West Indies have lost 13 of their last 17 WC ODIs.
  • West Indies have lost nine of their last 12 WC ODIs played in England.

Key Players

After the thrashing he received at the hands of English batsmen, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan has bounced back in style with two typically solid performances.
With consistent performances this tournament, Nicholas Pooran has impressed for West Indies. The century against Sri Lanka showed that he can be the real deal.
