Australia v India 1st ODI Tips, Preview and Predictions - Tight three-match series gets underway

Australia and India

It has been a successful Australian tour for India and action now moves to the ODIs for a three-match series starting with the first one at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The T20I series was drawn 1-1 before India enjoyed the euphoria of a 2-1 Test series win last week.

The underlying theme now for both the sides will be the upcoming ODI World Cup. India and Australia will have the World Cup squads on their mind, but that should not take anything away from the intensity of this series.

Australia

The Aussie selectors sprang a surprise by excluding some of the strongest white-ball players in the land. Chris Lynn. D’Arcy Short, Travis Head and Nathan Coulter-Nile are all missing out of the squad for one reason or the other.

That leaves the Australian cupboard short on ingredients – especially in the bowling department. However, the combination of Billy Stanlake, Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff is quite exciting to look forward to.

India

The Indians have rested their prime bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ODIs, which is understandable after the exertions in Test series. However, the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have been in impressive form over the last calendar year and will once again give India an edge.

What really gives India an edge is their top-order. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have been in stupendous form last year with the bat and should continue doing so. The presence of Virat Kohli – one of the best in the ODIs makes India a strong favourite to pick up a win.

Match Up

Australia are short of quality or composure with the bat, that leaves them short changed for this match. Lack of runs at the top could be a factor and so is their new-look bowling’s ability to keep the Indian top-order at bay.

History & Statistics

Australia have won 35 of the 48 ODIs they played against India at home.
In 2018, Australia have won just two of the 13 ODIs they have played against all teams.
At home against India, Australia have won eight of their last nine ODIs.
Australia have won eight of the last nine completed home ODIs against India.
India have won 14 of their last 20 ODIs and 35 of their last 49 overs.

Key Players

Marcus Stoinis has been talked up quite regularly for a place in the Test side. The all-rounder has been in excellent form in the Big Bash, with consistent runs and quality bowling performance. Time to replicate in the ODIs.

Kohli averaged more than 100 in a phenomenal 2018 that saw him continually raise the bar. Australia will hope for a different 2019, but ‘King Kohli’ might have a different opinion.

Prediction

A change of format should be good news for the Australians, who were second-best in the Tests. The lack of big names, however, could hamper their chances. India, don’t have any such worries, as they look to continue their domination.

Tips

Back India to have the highest opening partnership @ $1.87 (Sportsbet).
