Australia v India 1st T20 Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - India to take series opener

Australia's Glenn Maxwell against India

Tipped to be the second only to the Ashes series in terms of popularity and intensity, the Australia-India T20Is series will start on Wednesday.

The Gabba in Brisbane will witness the first of the three T20Is, as both sides look to start on the right foot.

There is a lot of action to come in the summer and all eyes will be on how quickly the visitors can adapt to the conditions down under. The hosts continue to miss their best players due to suspension, and it is no surprise that the visitors start as favourites.

Australia Match Preview

Australia were brushed aside by 21 runs in the only T20I by South Africa at Carrara. The fact that the Proteas completed a white-format double – after winning the ODIs 2-1 – is a reflection of the growing troubles for the home side.

There is no dearth of firepower at the top for the Kangaroos, however, with the likes of captain Aaron Finch, Chris Lynn and D’Arcy Short making up their top-order. Allrounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis give them a strong edge as well.

It is the bowling combination, though, that gives Australia a real edge – Billy Stanlake, Nathan Coulter-Nile, and Andrew Tye are probably the best trio of pacers you can get in the T20s.

India Match Preview

India had a successful home series against West Indies, defeating them 3-0 in a lopsided T20I series. Stand-in captain and opener Rohit Sharma (121) together with his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan (138) led them with the bat.

Most of their regulars, including regular captain Virat Kohli were rested and they still coasted to a win, which speaks a lot about India’s strength. Wicket keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is an exciting hard hitter, although India look a little short changed in their middle-order.

With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneswar Kumar bring vast IPL experience to the team. Throw in the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, India have the team to continue their winning even in Australia.

Match Up

Australia look down on confidence as their star-studded batting flopped against the Proteas. Even in the rain-shortened T20I, they were not up to the mark.

India will feel they have the right batting and the bowling power to start their series with a win. Australia’s chance lies in getting quick wickets at the top and hustling the Indian middle-order. However, with Virat, Rohit and Dhawan rounding the top-order, the Men in Blue start as favourites.
