Australia v India 1st Test Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Back Aussies to win opener

It’s the start of the marquee Australia-India Test series and the first of the four Tests will be played out at the Adelaide Oval from December 6–10.

This is a venue where Australia have lost just once against India in 11 Tests, winning seven and drawing three.

One thing is for sure – whichever side wins, will have an edge for the rest of the series. More so, after the T20s were shared by the sides 1-1.

Australia Preview

Australia had a mixed trip to the UAE where they lost the Tests 1-0. They showed excellent rear-guard defensive skills to draw the first Test, but were beaten comprehensively in the second.

The return to familiar conditions should cheer Australia – as they have won their last five Tests at Adelaide. Opener Marcus Harris could make his debut in this match, while Travis Head fights with Peter Handscomb for a place in the final XI.

It is the quicks – Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins – that gives hope to the Aussies of putting their recent troubles to bed.

India Preview

India thrashed West Indies 2-0 at home on the back of two comprehensive victories, but it is their 4-1 loss to England in their last overseas series that will be at the top of their minds.

This series couldn’t have started on a worse footing for the visitors, who lost their sparkling opener Prithvi Shaw to an injury in the practice match.
Bowling was listless in the practice game against a second-string Cricket Australia XI, which will worry captain Virat Kohli.

The absence of a genuine all-rounder puts Kohli’s selection woes into the limelight and he may end up choosing an extra batsman at number six.

Match Up

Australia remain short in the batting department, which puts more pressure on their bowling to deliver. The presence of as many as six left-handers in the final XI could mean a serious threat from off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the second innings, and Bumrah in the first.

India remain short changed on the team balance, leaving them a bowler short. The poor form of middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane and question marks over opener KL Rahul’s technique puts more pressure on Kohli, the batsman.

History & Statistics

Australia are winless in five Tests (D1, L4), but have not gone six Tests or more without a win since August 2013.
Australia have won just one of their last six Tests against India, but are unbeaten in nine home Tests against them.
The last time India have beaten Australia in Australia was in 2008.
India have won three of their last five Tests (W3, L2), but have lost four of their last five away Tests (W1, L4).
India have not drawn a Test since doing so against Sri Lanka in December 2017 – a run of 11 decisive Tests (W5, L6).

Key Players

Having shown his ability to bat longer in the testing conditions of the UAE, it is time for Usman Khawaja to show his mettle in home conditions.

Kohli has three centuries in four innings at this venue, to go with the 1063 Test runs in 10 Tests this calendar year.

Tips

Back Kohli to score a 1st innings fifty at odds of $2.20 (Ladbrokes).

Back Khawaja to score a 1st innings fifty at odds of $2.37 (bet365).
