Australia v India 2nd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Australia bid to win series

Shaun Marsh of Australia bats against India

A retro-fit-clad Australia rolled back the years to put in a dominant display in Sydney to win the first ODI against India by 34 runs. The hosts now have a chance to wrap up the series when the sides meet again on Tuesday in Adelaide.

This has been a summer of poor returns for the Australia, which means the series win – if and when it comes – will be a welcome boost. For India, the over-reliance on top-order will throw enough challenges for the series and the upcoming Word Cup selections.

Australia

Peter Handscomb (73 from 61 balls) brought his white ball skills to the fore in Sydney. With Usman Khawaja (59), Shaun Marsh (54) chipping in with fifties and Marcus Stoinis scoring 47 not out from 43 balls, the Aussie batting looked the real deal. Debutant Jason Behrendorff (2/39) and Jhye Richardson (4/26) ripped off the Indian top-order and landed the win.

Australia followed the ODI template perfectly well with the top-order laying a solid foundation and the middle-order flourishing on it. All-rounder Stoinis is a great boost for captain Aaron Finch, who may have finally found a balanced ODI outfit that can be competitive.

India

For the visitors, only Kuldeep Yadav (2/54) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/66) were among the wickets, as they struggled to replace Jasprit Bumrah’s efficiency. With the bat too, barring Rohit Sharma’s excellence at the top of the order (133 from 129) and MS Dhoni’s calm (51 from 96), there was nothing of note from the visitors.

India remain skewed with their batting completely dependent on the top-three. The absence of Hardik Pandya – due to off-field issues – affects their balance which is a huge concern.

Match Up

Australia will look to repeat their Sydney heroics, considering they got almost every little thing right.

India will be desperate to prove the first match loss was an aberration. The top-order trio will be the key once again and so is their tussle with the Australia fast bowlers.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won 36 of the 49 ODIs they played against India at home.
  • At home against India, Australia have won nine of their last ten ODIs.
  • Australia have won their last five ODIs at this venue.
  • India have won just one of the five ODIs they played in Adelaide against Australia, but that was in their recent match played in 2012.

Key Players

Marsh has been one of the most consistent ODI players in the recent matches for Australia. He has three centuries and a fifty in his last seven matches, and will be keen to shut the Indians.

For India, the same level of consistency is exhibited by Rohit Sharma. He has four centuries and three fifties in his last ten ODIs.

Prediction

With so little time to recuperate between ODIs, Australia look set to push for a series win. India’s over-dependence on the top-half could be the challenge for the visitors.

Back India to win the match @ $1.73 (BetEasy).

Back Rohit Sharma to score a fifty @ $2.62 (bet365).
