Australia v India 2nd T20 Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Can Australia seal series?

Glenn Maxwell

It was an excellent start to the Australian home series against India, as the two sides battled out at The Gabba in the 1st T20I and the series now moves to the MCG on Friday for the 2nd T20I.

Australia won the rain-shortened opening match by four runs (DLS Method) to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The series is on the line for the visitors, who will be desperate to get back into the reckoning. For Australia, it is a great chance to lay the marker for the rest of the tour.

Australia Match Preview

Australia rode on the batting heroics of Chris Lynn (37 from 20 balls, 4X6) and Glenn Maxwell (46 from 24, 4X6) to post 158/4 in 17 overs after rain shortened the game. The DLS revised target of 173 proved just enough as Australia restricted India to 169/7.

Marcus Stoinis’ all-round performance (33 from 19, 2/27) together with leg-spinner Adam Zampa’s man-of-the-match effort (2/22) won the day for Australia. It was a victory badly needed for the Kangaroos, who now have a chance to close out the series.

Inconsistency continues to be their worry, but with Maxwell in such fine form Australia can hope to build up from that performance.

India Match Preview

The Indian fielding was not up to the mark as Virat Kohli’s men dropped crucial catches at important junctures. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav impressed with 2/24 and opener Shikhar Dhawan held the innings together (76 from 42), but it was not enough.

A late cameo by Dinesh Karthik (30 from 13) was still not enough to go over the line, as India were left ruing the price they paid for missing crucial chances in the match.

The quality in the Men in Blue camp is still vastly superior and if they can crease out these minor chinks, a comeback can’t be ruled out.

Match Up

Maxwell continues to lead the side with his new-found consistency and will once again be the fulcrum of the Australian charge. Andrew Tye had a night to forget in the 1st T20I, but he is far too skilled to have two bad matches in succession.

India were let down by a rare twin failure from their premier top-order batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They were still not way off the track and minor improvements in the field can make India a tough force once again.

Key Players

Maxwell will once again be the man in focus for Australia and the hard-hitting batsman has shown that he can play as per match situation.

Dhawan is a different player when in form, because he keeps piling runs. The fluency in his stroke play at The Gabba was there for everyone to see and he will be crucial to his side’s hopes in this match.
