Australia v India 3rd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Can Australia win the series?

Australia and India clash in a decider

It is only fitting that the final ODI between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday will decide the ODI series winner.

Having drawn the T20Is 1-1 and won the Tests 2-1, India will look to leave the shores on a high.

Australia will not take it lying down, as they chase an elusive win that can only improve their chances ahead of pressing engagements including the ODI World Cup.

Australia

Shaun Marsh (185 runs, SR 95.85) has kept his Test struggles to one side in the ODI series and has been a revelation for the Aussies. Peter Handscomb (93 runs, SR 112.04) has also chipped in with the bat.

Marcus Stoinis (76 runs @ SR 96.20, three wickets @ ER 5.89) has excelled in his all-round capabilities which is good news for the hosts. Jhye Richardson’s pace (five wickets, ER 4.25) has been effective, to go with the support cast of Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Lyon.

The Australians, however, still look a bit out of balance and low on experience.

India

The Indian batting has been led by Rohit Sharma (176 runs, SR 97.23), while Virat Kohli (107 runs, SR 89.16) has come storming into form in Adelaide. Shikhar Dhawan’s form (32 runs, SR 110.34) remains a concern, though.

MS Dhoni (106 runs) has impressed with two consecutive fifties, but his strike rate (70.66) remains a concern. Bhuvneswar Kumar (six wickets, ER 5.55) and Mohammed Shami (three wickets, ER 5.20) have led their bowling attack.

India also look out of balance, as the lack of an all-rounder to call on remains a worry for Kohli.

Match Up

Australia will depend on Marsh and Richardson for giving them a rare series win. Concerns over Aaron Finch’s form pegs them back, but Khawaja and Handscomb have been playing their support roles well.

India remain skewed with their top-order reliance, but the consistency of Kohli in key games gives them a great edge.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won nine of their last 11 ODIs at this venue and nine of their 14 ODIs against India.
  • Australia have lost their last five bilateral ODI series since January 2017.
  • Australia have only lost two bilateral ODI series at home to Asian countries since 2011, both to India (W7, D1, L2).
  • India have won ten of 21 ODIs played at MCG, but have lost seven of their last ten here.
  • India have won ten of their last 11 bilateral ODI series.

Key Players

Marsh continued his ODI resurgence by picking up his fourth century in his last eight ODIs, to go with one fifty. He will once again be pivotal to Australia’s chances.

Kohli averages more than 99.04 in successful ODI chases, making him one of the deadliest batsmen of any era. India’s chances will multiply when he picks up runs.

Prediction

After a poor loss in the first match, India picked up form in the second and look in good nick ahead of this decider. It may boil down to how well the Indian batsmen fare against the threat of Australian bowling.

Tips

Back India to win the match @ $1.58 (Neds).

Back Shaun Marsh to score a fifty @ $2.75 (Ladbrokes).

Back Kohli to be India’s top batsman @ $3.25 (BetEasy).
