After dominating Pakistan in the T20I series, it is time for the Test whites as Australia start their two-match Test series with the first one at the Gabba in Brisbane starting from Thursday, November 21.

Australia were recently seen in the Ashes, where they drew the series in England but retained the urn. Pakistan will be looking to start their new regime well, as captain Azhar Ali looks to get going along with new coach Misbah Ul Haq.

Australia

It was Steve Smith, who led the Australians in England through their Ashes series. He had a stupendous series with the bat (774 runs, 3x100, 3x50) scoring runs at will. Marnus Labuschagne (353 runs, 4x50) was brilliant as well, which meant Australia were over-dependent on the duo.

Bowling still remains Australia’s best suit, with Pat Cummins (29 wickets) and Josh Hazlewood (20) expected to lead them once again. While the fast bowlers continue to rule the roost, Nathan Lyon (20 Ashes wickets) still remains a big threat.

Pakistan

Pakistan have lost their last four Tests, which is their worst run in the Tests since losing six consecutive Tests in 2017. However, like they have shown in the practice matches, Pakistan can be a tricky proposition when their bowling attack gets it right.

Babar Azam and Asad Shafiq will shoulder the responsibility for Pakistan with the bat, but it remains to be seen if they are up to the task. Bowling will be an interesting aspect of Pakistan with the variety they bring to the board. If the visiting pacers can bring their best game to Brisbane, the Test could turn out to be an interesting game.

Match Up

Australia have been reliant on Smith for their runs in England, and will need more from their top-order to be sure of their prospects. Thankfully, their bowling remains fearsome in these conditions and gives them an edge. Pakistan will be mindful of Australia’s fragile batting line-up and will look to target that with their bowling variety. It might end up being a test of who will score more than their counterparts. For the moment, it is Australia that have the upper hand.

History & Statistics

  • Australia are unbeaten at Brisbane for three decades and 30 Tests (W23, D7).
  • Australia have won their last ten Tests playing at home against Pakistan, since their last loss at Sydney in 1995.
  • Pakistan have lost their last four Tests away from home.
  • Pakistan have lost four of five Tests at Brisbane, where they are winless (D1, L4).
  • In their last eight series down under, Pakistan have started with a loss.

Key Players

While Smith remains Australia’s top bet, Marnus Labuschagne has been equally good for the Aussies. His tenacity makes him a great pick to be once again among the runs.

Asad Shafiq has been Pakistan’s top Test batsman for a while and even in the practice matches, he warmed up with consecutive centuries. He will have to be in the thick of things for the visitors to have any chance of competing.
