Sydney weather stopped Australia from extending their winning run in T20Is as Pakistan escaped out of jail and remain level as the series moves to Canberra for the second match on Tuesday.

Although Australia earned a moral victory from the 18.1 overs bowled, the series is still standing 0-0. But the onus is on Pakistan to improve.

Australia

The Aussie bowlers showed great control to limit the visitors to 107 for 5 in 15 overs. The opening bowling duo of Mitchell Starc and Kane Richardson picked up two wickets each to lay the marker. Ashton Agar chipped in with one wicket, while Adam Zampa proved expensive.

Any hopes of a win were thrashed by rain stopping their charge after 3.1 overs. Captain Aaron Finch showed his belligerent side with 37* off 16 balls, while David Warner continued to be elusive for the bowlers. With the little evidence on show, it was apparent that Australia retain the edge.

Pakistan

New captain Babar Azam (59* off 38) was the only bright spot for Pakistan, as the visiting batsmen struggled for fluency. The conditions were a challenge, but most of the shots played by them were poor. Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail and Asif Ali flopped, although Mohammad Rizwan (31 off 33) was patient enough to bide his time.

There wasn’t enough time for the Pakistani bowlers to show their wares. However, there was just enough time for the returning veteran Mohammad Irfan to be smashed around for 26 runs in one over. The conditions and time in Canberra could be enough to show how good the Pakistan bowling unit can be.

Match Up

Australia were clinical in the first match and it was only bad weather that stopped their juggernaut. They did manage to outmanoeuvre their opponents in all departments, which is a good sign for the home fans. Pakistan will have to do all the running, as they search for quick-fix improvements. Babar Azam will need his other batsmen to extend better support. Whether it comes straight away is a question that is tough for Pakistan fans to decipher.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won their last five completed T20Is.
  • Australia have lost 12 of their 20 completed H2H T20Is to date.
  • Eight of the last 11 completed T20I H2Hs were won by the team batting first.
  • Pakistan have won their last five completed T20Is against Australia.
  • Pakistan have lost six of their last seven completed T20Is.
  • Eleven of Pakistan’s last 13 completed T20Is were won by the team batting first.

Key Players

Although he played only four balls in the rain-curtailed first T20I, David Warner made sure he remained unbeaten at the crease. A full match will give him the best opportunity to show his expertise.

Babar Azam is the world’s top-ranked T20I batsman and for a reason. As shown in Sydney, he remains head and shoulders above his team mates. However, he needs better support from the batsmen to play around him.
