Australia continued their love affair with Brisbane by defeating Pakistan by an innings and five runs and hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match series going into the day-night Test at Adelaide from Friday.

The hosts were dominant in all aspects in the first Test, and would like to continue the same. Considering they have a perfect win record in day-night Tests, this should be another cake walk for Australia.

As for Pakistan, they have a tough task of improving their performance overnight and stay competitive.

Australia

In a complete contrast from their Ashes form, Australia enjoyed the renaissance of David Warner (154). Marnus Labuschagne (185) was in his elements as well to help Australia complete dominate Pakistan’s bowling. Mitchell Starc (seven wickets) and Josh Hazlewood (six wickets) led with the ball and in the end, it was a stroll in the park for Australia.

There aren’t any worries for the hosts on current dorm and that augurs well for their chances. Australia know that consistency will be key to their World Test Championship chances and another win will surely be a step in the right direction.

Pakistan

Pakistan have lost their last five Tests, which is their worst run in the Tests since losing six consecutive Tests in 2017. Although they impressed in the second innings with Babar Azam (104) and Mohammad Rizwan (95) finding their feet, Pakistan need more.

Bowlers couldn’t show their true worth for Pakistan, with just the teenage quick Naseem Shah impressing. Even Yasir Shah struggled for control and in the end, it was a tough outing under the sun for the visitors. How they can improve their bowling performance could well determine their chances in this Test.

Match Up

Australia would have been happy with how Warner found his feet and Labuschagne continued his good form. The pace trio were unplayable and should once again relish the conditions in Adelaide. Pakistan, on the other hand, have been woefully short in finding a collective answer to their troubles. If they can build on from their second innings performances, it should make a good spectacle. Regardless, backing the hosts to pick up another easy win looks the pragmatic pick on current form. As for the individual picks, keep an eye on Labuschagne, Azam and Lyon.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won five of their last six Tests at Adelaide.
  • Australia are unbeaten in five day-night Tests, including three at Adelaide.
  • Australia have won their last 13 home Tests against Pakistan, with their last loss coming in 1995.
  • Pakistan have lost their last five Tests away from home.
  • Pakistan are winless in four Adelaide Tests, although they have drawn three.

Key Players

Smith had an unusual knock in the first Test, where he fell to his nemesis Yasir Shah making it the seventh time he was dismissed by the leg-spinner. He would be keen to make amends.

Azam is spoken in the same breath as the fab three – Kane Williamson, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli; at least by Pakistani fans. It is time he gets a bit more consistent and add to his tally of two Test 100s – one of those coming in the first Test.
