Australia v South Africa 1st ODI Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Back Australia to win opener

South Africa and Australia

Australia and South Africa are not exactly arch rivals, but matches involving them aren’t really friendly...and another chapter starts on Sunday.

Now with the recent series between these sides having witnessed the infamous ‘ball tampering saga’, this white ball series Down Under will see no love lost between the teams. The first of the three ODIs will be played at the Perth Stadium on Sunday.

Match Preview

Australia were whitewashed by England 5-0 in their last series in June this year. They went to UAE just before this series and lost the three-match T20I series 3-0. New captain Aaron Finch is tasked with taking the side to the 2019 World Cup as they look for solutions to their long-standing problems, including the absence of David Warner and Steve Smith.

The hosts have a strong unit on paper, with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Coulter-Nile making Australia a strong bowling unit. Finch will be tasked with scoring runs and has an exciting set of hitters at his disposal – the likes of Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell and D’Arcy Short.

South Africa thrashed Zimbabwe 3-0 at home in their last series, but have not really been impressive. The experienced JP Duminy and Hashim Amla will be out of the tour, which means extra pressure on captain Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock to lead with the bat.

Bowling looks strong with the exciting youngster Kagiso Rabada and the experienced Dale Steyn making a strong combination. With Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo also in the squad, South Africa look to make it tough for the Aussies with their strong bowling.

Match Up

Australia vs South Africa matches have always been close and their head-to-head record indicates the same. In 96 ODIs played so far, Australia have won 47, lost 45 and three have been ties. Even in Australia in the 36 matches played, the record is 18-17 in favour of Australia with one tie.

Both sides are in the midst of poor form with issues yet to be addressed in their batting order. The strong bowling units make us wonder if this will be a direct shootout between the two sets of bowlers. The hosts may overcome their poor form with a win in this close contest.

Key Players

Finch has an extra responsibility in lifting his side out of the troubles they find themselves in. Being the captain of the side and an important batsman, he will be expected to lead from the front.

Rabada is easily one of the best fast bowlers in the world at this moment. His ability to make the ball talk at pace will pose questions to the Australian batsmen, who are already low on confidence.
