Australia v South Africa 2nd ODI Tips, Prediction and Match Preview - Can Australia bounce back?

Australia and South Africa

Australia continued their slump and fell to a six-wicket loss against South Africa on Sunday in Perth and the series now moves to Adelaide for the 2nd ODI on Friday.

The hosts need a win to stay alive in the series, while the visitors can assert their supremacy with a win.

Australia Match Preview

It was the start of Australian home summer, but the fans were subjected to an abject display. Batting first, the Kangaroos were dismissed for 152 as Dale Steyn (2/18) put in a man-of-the-match effort. Only Nathan Coulter-Nile (34) and Alex Carey (33) showed some fight with the bat.

It will be difficult for Australia to come back from the lows of Perth – it was their lowest home ODI total for 21 years. Although there are concerns with the ball, it is the batting that has lost the game for the Kangaroos.

With the 2019 World Cup preparations on the radar, it will be interesting to see how quickly the Aussies can regroup.

South Africa Match Preview

Dale Steyn rolled back the years with a stellar display, although it is Andile Phehlukwayo (3/33) who topped the bowling charts for South Africa. All the bowlers – barring Kagiso Rabada – were among the wickets and the Proteas used the conditions better than their hosts.

With the bat as well, there were meaningful contributions from the top-three, which has been their Achilles’ heel in the recent times. Quinton de Kock (47) and Reeza Hendricks (44) gave a solid start, while Aiden Markram (36 off 32) played an enterprising knock.

The chance now for the Proteas is to repeat the performance and win their first bilateral ODI series in Australia since doing so in 2009.

Match Up

Australia are now in the midst of their worst year ever – having lost ten of the 11 ODIs played this year. A quick turnaround is needed, but the Kangaroos do not inspire confidence of staging one.

Bowling was always South Africa’s biggest strengths on this tour, and their spearheads responded in Perth. The top-order was amongst runs as well and captain Faf du Plessis will hope to deliver more of the same.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have lost seven ODIs in a row – which is their worst streak ever.
  • Australia have lost 15 of their last 17 ODIs winning just two.
  • Australia have lost five of their last six ODIs played at home.
  • Australia have won five of the last six ODIs played in Adelaide.
  • South Africa have won their last six ODIs against Australia.

Key Players

Travis Head’s numbers do not inspire confidence, but he is one youngster who is capable of leading the Australian revival. A quick innings at the top could be the tonic the Kangaroos need.

De Kock has 11 scores of fifty and above in his last 27 ODIs and his strike rate has always been hovering around 100. That makes him a special player for the Proteas and a threat for the Kangaroos.

Tips

Back South Africa to win the match at odds of $2.00 (bet365).

Back South Africa to make the highest 1st 15 Overs Score at odds of $2.00 (bet365).

Back South Africa’s Quinton de Kock to score over 0.5 sixes at odds of $2.50 (Ladbrokes).
