Australia v South Africa T20 Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Back the Aussies to win

Chris Lynn

The start of the home summer hasn’t gone to plan for the Australian cricket team, but they get a chance to put one across South Africa when they meet in the only T20I at the Carrara Oval in Queensland on Saturday.

A 2-1 series loss in the ODIs to South Africa continued their problems following on from defeats to Pakistan in UAE.

This match is a significant one for the venue that is scheduled to play as a neutral host in the upcoming Big Bash season. Will this new venue start something new for the beleaguered Australian cricket team?

Australia Match Preview

The last time Australia played T20Is was against Pakistan last month in a three-match series that they lost 3-0. The scoreline was an apt reflection of their problems with the bat, which saw all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile top the stats (61).

However, the Aussie line-up led by Aaron Finch, D’Arcy Short, Chris Lynn, and Glenn Maxwell should relish the return to home conditions, with the drop-in pitches set to suit their style.

Regular bowlers like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will not feature, but with the fiery Billy Stanlake and the T20 magician Andrew Tye in the ranks, Australia have a bowling line-up that should give them an edge.

South Africa Match Preview

South Africa managed to pip Australia in the ODIs and the last time they played three T20Is against Zimbabwe earlier in the year that they won 2-0 at home.

The likes of Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks and David Miller have picked up form in the ODIs as well as the practice match against Cricket Australia XI, raising hopes of an encore.

Bowling remains their strong suit with Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo joined by the likes of Imran Tahir and Chris Morris. Captain Faf du Plessis will look to sign-off the series with another win and he has a squad to achieve that.

Match Up

It will be an interesting battle on the cards, as the likes of Lynn, Short and Maxwell will be up against Ngidi, Rabada and Tahir on one side. On the other, Markram, Hendricks and du Plessis will be tested by Stanlake, Tye and Zampa. The match could be decided by how well the batsmen stand up against the testing bowling, but Australia may have the edge thanks to the array of T20 specialists in their ranks.

History & Statistics

Australia have won their last four home T20Is.
Australia have won four of their last five T20Is against South Africa.
Australia have won five of their last six home T20Is against South Africa.

Key Players

Chris Lynn struggled to get going in the ODIs, but the freedom of T20s could see the strong hitter in him coming to the fore.

Imran Tahir enjoys tormenting the Aussies, and the recent success of leg-spinner Shadab Khan in the UAE T20Is against the Kangaroos should boost his confidence.
