The road map to T20 World Cup in 2020 will be in focus, as Australia and Sri Lanka start their three-match T20I series with the first match played in Adelaide on Sunday.

Australia haven’t taken to the field since regaining the Ashes in England. This will be their first T20 outing since February, when they lost 2-0 to India. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are buoyant after a successful Pakistan tour where their second-string side blanked the hosts.

Australia

Coach Justin Langer stamped his influence by picking up a squad full of T20 specialists. The biggest news coming from the Australian camp is the ‘home coming’ of David Warner and Steve Smith. Further, the side has impressive T20 performers all through.

It will be interesting to see how Aaron Finch can get the best out of this unit. There are still concerns over the consistency of middle-order to be led by Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Turner and Ben McDermott. Bowling too bears a solid look with Billy Stanlake, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins looking to pose tough threat.

Sri Lanka

The Islanders surprised everyone with a 3-0 series over Pakistan. That it was achieved without the regulars is a sign of their success. For this tour, Sri Lanka will have the services of their returning captain Lasith Malinga, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera among others.

Sri Lanka lost out to Prime Minister’s XI by one wicket in their warm-up match. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Oshada Fernando with the bat and Kasun Rajitha, Lakshan Sandakan with the ball had fruitful outing. Overall, the visitors show good promise to stretch the hosts.

Match Up

Sri Lanka have been excellent in their Pakistan tour, although it was their second-string unit that did the job. Lasith Malinga and the other big guys coming back will strengthen their claims. Australia on the other hand will look to get into their groove with a good display. It remains to be seen if the visiting batsmen make the adjustments, but early signs show they are on the path.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have lost three of their four T20Is at this venue, but their only win came against Sri Lanka.
  • Australia have won five of their last seven T20Is at home.
  • Seven of Australia’s last ten T20Is at home favoured the chasing side.
  • Sri Lanka have won five of six T20Is against Australia.
  • Sri Lanka have lost five of the last seven T20Is under Lasith Malinga captaincy, winning only one.
  • Lasith Malinga has won his last five tosses.

Key Players

David Warner didn’t have a great Ashes series after his recall from ban. In fact, it was a grim series for the opener. However, he will relish the return to home conditions and the change of format.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa had a great international initiation with 112 runs in three T20Is. The stylish left-hander will once again look to lead the side with his batting.
