Australia v Sri Lanka 1st Test Tips, Predictions and Preview - Aussies bid for revival

Pat Cummins

It has been a forgettable summer for Australian cricket so far, but they get a chance to revive fortunes when a struggling Sri Lanka visit for a two-match Test series.

Losing a Test series at home to India for the first-time ever and then following it up with an ODI series loss has heaped pressure on Australia ahead of the first Test, which will be played at the Gabba in a day-night pink-ball fixture.

Australia

The Indian series was one where the gaping holes in the Aussie batting order were ruthlessly exposed. There were no centuries from the Australian batsmen through the four-match series, while only eight fifties were scored. Marcus Harris (258 runs, Avg. 36.85) and Travis Head (237 runs, Avg. 33.85) were the only batsmen to come out with a bit of credit.

Many eyes will be on team composition as Joe Burns and Matt Renshaw get recalls, while Will Pucovski and Kurtis Patterson are on the cusp of ‘Baggy Green’ debuts. Josh Hazlewood’s injury is a concern, but their bowling looks strong with Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon heading the unit.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka have had an even more disastrous start to 2019 than Australia. Over a tour of two Tests, three ODIs and one T20I in New Zealand, the Islanders won nothing. Batting remains a worry for the Lankans, accentuated by the absence of their top-scorer from New Zealand Tests – Angelo Mathews (258 runs, Avg. 258).

Kusal Mendis (225 runs) will be expected to step up, while the aggressive instincts of Niroshan Dickwella gives their middle-order a different dimension.

The bowling unit will look to senior pro Tharanga Lakmal for leadership, while the presence of speedsters Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha and Dushmantha Chameera makes it exciting.

Match Up

Australia’s bowling looks settled, but the inconsistent batsmen need to improve ahead of the Ashes.

Sri Lanka have an exciting pace attack that should make things interesting. However, their batsmen are struggling for runs.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won all four day/night Tests they have played, one at Gabba.
  • Australia have won 17 of their 29 Tests against Sri Lanka.
  • Australia have never lost at home to Sri Lanka, winning 11 of 13 Tests.
  • Sri Lanka have lost their last five Tests in Australia.
  • Sri Lanka are winless in their last 12 Tests (D2, L10) played in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.

Key Players

Pat Cummins had an amazing series against India (163 runs, 14 wickets), showing great maturity and consistency.

He may have scored just 96 runs in New Zealand, but Dimuth Karunaratne’s presence at the top of the order is a positive for the Lankans. He needs to get back among runs, though.

Prediction

Lights and the ‘Pink ball’ bring Nathan Lyon into the game for Australia and, as his 21 wickets against India suggest, the off-spinner is a difficult proposition to get away. Australia are not in the best form before the first ball is bowled, but Sri Lanka’s form isn’t any better.

Tips

Back Cummins to pick over 2.5 first innings wickets @ $2.25 (Ladbrokes).

Back Marcus Harris to score a fifty @ $2.50 (Betstar).

Back Dimuth Karunaratne to score a fifty @ $4.00 (Ladbrokes).
