Australia v Sri Lanka 2nd T20 Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Australia to seal series

A maiden T20I century from opener David Warner helped Australia to a 134-run win at Adelaide and Sri Lanka are now up against it in the second match in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Australia had so much going for them in the first match – their highest-ever total on home soil, biggest-ever T20I winning margin and Sri Lanka’s biggest-ever T20I defeat. All this, without even requiring Steven Smith to bat.

Sri Lanka will have to improve a lot, if they are to take the series to a decider in Melbourne.

Australia

Warner took a while to get going, but was at his imperious best at Adelaide on his ‘home coming’ after the ban. The opener took just 56 balls to score his century, while the promoted Glenn Maxwell (62 off 28 balls, 7x4 3x6) was equally imperious.

Captain Aaron Finch would have been equally pleased with how his bowlers went about the job. Adam Zampa (3 for 14) topped the bowling charts, while Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins picked up two-wickets each. There was very little discomfort for the hosts in the first match and they look set to continue that trend.

Sri Lanka

The visitors had high hopes after what has been an excellent series in Pakistan. However, they were bumped back to earth in a crude manner in the first game where nothing went their way. While every bowler struggled, Kasun Rajitha’s worst-ever figures in a T20I fixture (4-0-75-0) meant they were behind the game from the start.

That they couldn’t cross Warner’s individual total was a testimony to Sri Lanka’s struggles. How they can improve is anybody’s guess, but a better performance from all fields of play is the need of the hour.

Match Up

Australia have very little to worry about from Adelaide and will be looking to close out the series here. Everything clicked like a dream for the hosts in the first match. That is bad news for the visitors, who need to erase this performance out of their system in a jiffy. That might be difficult to execute and it is Australia who start this game as favourites.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won three of their four T20Is at this venue.
  • Australia have won six of their last eight T20Is at home.
  • Six of Australia's last nine T20I results under Aaron Finch favoured the side batting first.
  • Nine of last 11 T210Is featuring SL have favoured the side batting first, including the last five.
  • Sri Lanka have lost six of their last eight T20Is under Lasith Malinga captaincy, winning only one.
  • Lasith Malinga has won his last six tosses.

Key Players

Glenn Maxwell showed in Adelaide that he can be the trump card for Australia in this format. His ability to strike from the first ball makes him a good pick to be a floater. Exceptional fielding skills make his influence that much more vital.

Dasun Shanaka was under-used in the first T20I bowling just one over and then losing regular partners at the bat. If he can influence the games a bit more, Shanaka can be Sri Lanka’s card out of the jail.
