Australia v Sri Lanka 2nd Test Tips, Predictions and Preview - Aussies to seal series win

Pat Cummins

The Australian Test home summer will end at a new venue, as Manuka Oval in Canberra gets ready for the second and final Test of the Sri Lanka series starting from Friday.

Both sides have gaps in their line-ups, which makes this match an interesting proposition. With the curator promising a batting paradise that will last for five days, there is a flicker of hope for the visitors.

Australia

After a demoralising series against India, Australia stormed back with an innings and 40-runs win over Sri Lanka in Brisbane. A career-first ten-wicket match haul for Pat Cummins (4/39 & 6/23), to go with the batting heroics of Marnus Labuschagne (81) and Travis Head (84) were the highlights.

All eyes will be on the Aussie batting once again, as they search for improvements. Bowling, though, looks settled and shouldn’t pose a concern for captain Tim Paine.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka struggled to compete, as the batsmen failed to turn up. Only Niroshan Dickwella (64 & 24) offered resistance in both the innings, while the others curled up without a fight. Suranga Lakmal (5/75) was the only bowler who kept the Aussies under check.

It was with the bat that they lost the match. Unless the top-order improves and posts a better picture of itself, this match could go down the same way as the Brisbane Test.

Match Up

Australia’s bowling looks fearsome for the task and the addition of Marcus Stoinis to the ranks gives them options. Question marks remain over the ability of batsmen to score big, which could come into play at the Manuka Oval.

Sri Lanka have shown that they can attack the Aussie batsmen with consistent bowling, but their batting leaves a lot to be desired. Unless the senior pros Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal raise up their game, it could be another hiding in the wait for the visitors.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won 18 of their 30 Tests against Sri Lanka.
  • Australia have never lost at home to Sri Lanka, winning 12 of 14 Tests.
  • Not since 1882-83 did Australia endure a home summer without a single Test century.
  • Sri Lanka have lost their last six Tests in Australia.
  • Sri Lanka are winless in their last 13 Tests (D2, L11) played in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.

Key Players

Cummins had a great game in Brisbane, leading the Aussies with aplomb. With his ability to take wickets and be frugal at the same time, he will once again be crucial for his side’s hopes.

Lakmal showed in the first Test that he can be a handful when the conditions are right. With a young bowling unit around, he will once again be the leader that Sri Lanka need.

Prediction

Both sides aren’t top of their form or confidence, but Sri Lanka look the worse of it. This match promises to be another chance for the individual players to further their chances of Ashes selection. Keep an eye on Marcus Harris and Cummins, while Karunaratne and Lakmal will be key for the visitors.

Tips

Back Cummins to take over 2.5 1st innings wickets @ $2.10 (Ladbrokes).

Back Head to score 50 in 1st innings @ $2.75 (Ladbrokes).

Back Karunaratne to be top Sri Lankan 1st innings batsman @ $3.75 (Neds).
