Australia v Sri Lanka 3rd T20 Tips, Predictions and Preview - Australia to complete whitewash

David Warner

Australia continued their strangle hold over Sri Lanka with a nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Brisbane and they now target a series whitewash in Melbourne on Friday.

Having recorded a 134-run win in the first match and following it with the Brisbane victory, Australia have an unassailable 2-0 lead and with that the series. As the teams move to Melbourne, all eyes will be on Sri Lanka and how they respond.

The Islanders have been listless through the series in all departments. Captain Lasith Malinga was unable to inspire confidence to the battling unit and that remains a sore point. Australia could use the game to test their bench strength and build confidence towards next year’s World Cup.

Australia

David Warner has had a great series so far (160 runs, SR 164.94) remaining unbeaten and winning both the games single-handedly. Steve Smith (53* off 36 balls) showed his class in the second match, highlighting how strong this Australian outfit is.

With the ball, Adam Zampa (five wickets, ER 4.25) continued to enjoy success against the indifferent Sri Lankan batsmen. Pat Cummins also showed great skills and overall it has been comprehensive domination by the hosts.

Sri Lanka

Unfortunately for the visitors, they are yet to turn up in the series. They have flopped big time with the bat scoring 99 and 117. None of their batsmen could even muster a score of 30 in the two games so far. All the positives from a successful Pakistan tour seem to have vanished into thin air.

The problems for Sri Lanka lie across the board, but their batsmen need to get some runs. The two matches saw their top-order flop and the middle-order crumble. Not that their bowlers did anything to cover themselves in glory, but Sri Lanka need to put up a par score in Melbourne to have a semblance of chance.

Match Up

The only worry for Australia so far is that their middle-order remains untested. Only five batsmen had a hit in the middle so far, while one of them faced just one delivery. Sri Lanka would have loved to have that luxury, as they continue to search for elusive answers to their consistent worries. None more so than their captain who continues to struggle in his quest to inspire his side.

History & Statistics

  • Australia have won seven of their last nine T20Is at home.
  • Seven of Australia's last ten T20I results under Aaron Finch favoured the side batting first.
  • Ten of last 12 T210Is featuring SL have favoured the side batting first, including the last six.
  • Sri Lanka have lost seven of their last nine T20Is under Lasith Malinga captaincy, winning only one.
  • Lasith Malinga has won his last seven tosses.

Key Players

David Warner is probably making up for the lost time, going by the way he has been scoring runs. The opener once again will be key to Australia’s chances of dominating the visitors.

Lasith Malinga is under pressure to improve – not just as a player but also as the captain of an underwhelming side. He did little to inspire confidence from his side. With the last chance to salvage something from the series, he could be looking to put his best foot forward.
