A loss to England halted India’s unbeaten run at the 2019 ICC World Cup but they are still in charge of their destiny and need just a win from their next two matches.

Up next for India is a game against Bangladesh at Edgbaston, Birmingham, with Bangladesh’s fortunes still hanging in the balance.

India have 11 points and are still second in the standings. Bangladesh have seven points from seven games with games against India and Pakistan remaining. A rare chance of making it to the top-four remains, but Bangladesh need to win both their matches.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh have been impressive in all their games so far. Wins over South Africa, West Indies and Afghanistan have shown that they can be a dangerous customer in suitable conditions.

When the ball spun for their slow bowlers, Bangladesh have managed to stifle the opposition. With Shakib Al Hasan impressing with both bat and the ball (476 runs, ten wickets), they look all set to stun the Indians once again. Although their chances are remote, with qualification to the semis a dangling carrot, Bangladesh will look to bring their best form.

India

Barring the loss to England, India looked the team to beat this tournament. However, troubles at the top and the middle-order woes have crippled the side. They still have two games left before the knockouts to find out answers.

Regardless, the form of Rohit Sharma (440 runs, Avg. 88) and Virat Kohli (382 runs, five 50+ scores) is a huge positive. Mohammad Shami (13 wickets) has burst on to the scene with three consecutive four-wicket hauls. Although the spinners were thrashed around in the England game, Kohli’s side looks to have a balanced bowling attack, at least on paper.

Match Up

Playing their second game in three days could be a challenge for India. In addition, their batsmen had struggled once Sharma and Kohli departed. Therein lies the chance for Bangladesh, who can look to stifle the Indians with their tight bowling. It will be an interesting battle, as the recent games between these sides have been competitive and close. With their tournament on the line, Bangladesh could look to pip their neighbours to the post.
