Bangladesh v New Zealand Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - Black Caps face tricky contest

After a surprising, yet well-deserved win over South Africa, Bangladesh look to continue their momentum when they take on New Zealand in the ICC World Cup tournament on Wednesday at The Oval in London.

Both sides have won their first round of matches. New Zealand thrashed Sri Lanka by ten wickets, while Bangladesh surprised South Africa by 21 runs. A long tournament could be detrimental to maintaining momentum, which is why both sides would like to continue winning.

Bangladesh

A win against the Proteas came completely out of the blue. The senior pros Mushfiqur Rahim (78) and Shakib Al Hasan (75) led from the front as Bangladesh posted a highly competitive 330. The bowlers led by Mustafizur Rahman (3 for 67) then strangulated the chase ending in a comfortable win for the Tigers.

As the captain Mashrafe Mortaza said after the win, getting carried away with one win will not help Bangladesh’s cause. Another surprise win could go a long win in cementing their top-four hopes.

New Zealand

The underdogs for top-four places in many ways, New Zealand showed through an emphatic win over Sri Lanka that they are here to stay. Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson picked up three wickets each to blow Sri Lanka away for 136, which was then chased away easily within 16.1 overs with Martin Guptill (73*) leading the riot.

New Zealand know the perils of taking Bangladesh lightly, but they also know that they can bank on the conditions. Another quietly confident performance should give the Kiwis a platform to pick up another full point game.

Match Up

Like they demonstrated against South Africa, Bangladesh will hope that their seniors will keep them in the game. Mushfiqur, Shakib, Tamim and Mustafizur will be key for Bangladesh once again.

New Zealand will look to maintain their pace charge and hope to catch Bangladesh on the back foot. Should the pitch take turn, it could make things interesting, but for now the Kiwis will remain confident.

History & Statistics

  • Bangladesh have won six of their last seven ODIs played at neutral venues.
  • Tamim Iqbal has an average of 79.67 at this venue, more than double his overall numbers.
  • New Zealand have won eight of their last ten ODIs against Bangladesh, including the last three.
  • Trent Boult has picked up at least two wickets in four out of the seven matches against Bangladesh.

Key Players

Shakib has done it time and again with his performances for Bangladesh. His ability to keep scoring runs at pace, while picking up wickets at crucial times mean that he will once again be a key player for Bangladesh.

Guptill has a lot of catching up to do, after failing to be consistent over the years. His destructive ability at the top is still second to none and if he gets going, Bangladesh will feel the pinch.
