Bangladesh v Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - Neighbours eye crucial victory

Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan

The latest match of the ICC World Cup 2019 will feature Asian neighbours Bangladesh and Sri Lanka battle it out for two crucial points at County Ground in Bristol on Tuesday.

Bangladesh started the tournament well with a win over South Africa, but have since come up short against New Zealand and England. Sri Lanka have a win over Afghanistan and a washout against Pakistan to show for their three points.

Bangladesh

The Tigers will be wary of their batting inconsistencies, as only Shakib Al Hasan (260 runs, SR 95.94) and Mushfiqur Rahim (141, SR 85.45) have been among the runs. Other senior pros Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah are yet to fire.

With the ball, it is the spinners Mehidy Hasan (five wickets) and Shakib (three) doing the trick. However, the most pleasant surprise has to be the form of Mohammad Saifuddin (six wickets).

Sri Lanka

The Islanders were lucky to have picked up a point from a washout against Pakistan, as it was hoped that the Lankans would lose that. Their NRR is still in the negative, which is a big concern, if they are dreaming of a surprise final-four attempt.

Kusal Perera (107 runs, SR 101.90) remains the only batsman enjoying the tournament, while their best bowler Nuwan Pradeep is out of this game with an injury. That puts extra pressure on Lasith Malinga (three wickets) to step up and take more responsibility.

Match Up

It has been all about Shakib for Bangladesh so far. His all-round efforts have been extremely clinical and consistent. The Tigers will hope that Tamim picks up some form, while their captain Mashrafe Mortaza is also due a big effort.

Sri Lanka are in the midst of big doldrums and would have welcomed the washout against Pakistan. Question marks remain over their batting efforts, where Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne remain their only hopes.

History & Statistics

  • Bangladesh have lost their last two World Cup matches, but have not lost three in a row in a single edition since 2007.
  • Bangladesh have lost each of their three World Cup matches against Sri Lanka.
  • Sri Lanka have lost just seven of their 45 matches against Bangladesh, but three of those have come in their last six H2Hs.
  • Sri Lanka have lost six of their last eight completed ODIs played in England.

Key Players

Who else but Shakib for Bangladesh? The all-rounder has got six 50+ scores from his last seven matches and is one of the best players around on current form. To add to his batting, he has loads to offer with the ball!

Kusal Perera loves to give the ball a thump and that gives a lot of flexibility to the Sri Lankans. Should the match be reduced, by any chance of rain, the swashbuckler could be all the more important for Sri Lanka. Watch out for the big shots from the opener!
