Brisbane Heat v Melbourne Stars BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Will Heat send McCullum off with a win?

Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum’s farewell will be top of the agenda when Brisbane Heat play their final game of the regular Big Bash League campaign when they host Melbourne Stars at The Gabba on Friday.

The Heat (W5, L7, NR1) have a minor chance of upsetting the odds and storming into the finals. They must win and hope for a favourable set of results if McCullum's time with the side is to be extended.

Brisbane Heat

Two wins on the trot belies the fact that the Heat have lost three in a row prior to that. They have missed a lot of their chances and their batting has flopped consistently. Barring their top-three – McCullum, Chris Lynn and Max Bryant – none of the Heat batsmen aggregate 200 or more.

Josh Lalor (17 wickets) has punched above his weight and should once again be at the forefront of their attack. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (12 wickets) continues to be frugal, but the Heat attack have been inconsistent all through.

Melbourne Stars

Forget the 27-run loss to Perth Scorchers in their last match, the Stars are a team on the up. They have won three games on the trot prior to that, but are still not guaranteed a spot in the finals.

It is the presence of their consistent all-rounder Marcus Stoinis (361 runs, 14 wickets) that is a huge boost for the Stars. However, only three players aggregate 200 or more, with Maxwell joined by Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dunk. Bowling gets a boost with Sandeep Lamichhane (eight wickets, ER 6.81) returning to the squad.

Match Up

It will be an emotional game for McCullum and the Heat, although they will be aware of their remote chance of finals’ qualification. Consistency remains their bane and Heat will once again look to individual brilliances to pick up a win.

The Stars need to win one of their last two matches, but postponing their qualification to the final game of the regular season could be counterproductive. That might be just enough to get the Stars back on track.

Key Battles

Matt Renshaw had a terrific innings of 90* to lead the Heat against the Strikers in their last match. Could that be a breakthrough innings for the southpaw?

When the sides last met less than a fortnight before, Stoinis pulled the plug on the Heat with a spectacular all-round display. Will he be eyeing an encore?

History & Statistics

  • Heat have won five of the last six matches against the Stars.
  • That includes a 3-2 record against them at The Gabba.
  • Heat have won four of the six matches played in January against the Stars.
  • Heat have lost four of their last six matches played at this venue, winning just one.
  • Stars have lost five of the six matches they have won the toss against the Heat.

Prediction

There is enough motivation for both sides ahead of this match. The Heat will look to make it a memorable farewell for one of their favourite sons, while the Stars would want to book their finals’ place. It could once again be an interesting game, just like it was earlier in the season.
