The home of cricket Lord’s will host the Ashes before the Ashes as a crucial 2019 ICC World Cup (WC) encounter between hosts England (W4, L2) will take on Australia (W5, L1) on Tuesday.

This match #32 of the tournament will have a lot of bearing on the chances of the chasing pack for the top-four.

England’s shocking loss to Sri Lanka has given life to the teams outside the top-four. With just one point separating England from fifth-placed Bangladesh, the path could get clumsier if they lose this. Australia, on the other hand, are looking to get back to the top of the standings.

England

If there is any side in the top-four that is looking vulnerable to drop out, it is England. Their last three matches are against Australia, India, and New Zealand – the three strong sides of the tournament. And, they haven’t beaten any of those sides in a WC since 1992 (T1, L9).

The absence of Jason Roy at the top has robbed England of the much-needed energy with the bat. Although Joe Root has stepped up the plate and the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are enjoying the duet, the weight of expectations is going to be heavy for the hosts.

Australia

The Aussies have been silently picking up wins and sit just one point adrift of the top spot. The loss to India remains their only blip this tournament, as the returning David Warner and Aaron Finch continue to make strong starts. Steve Smith in the middle is another comforting factor, although the lack of impetus in the middle-overs is going to be a concern.

The strong returns for Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are a positive sign for the side. However, the ineffectiveness of Adam Zampa is a worrying trend, leaving them dry in the middle overs with the ball.

Match Up

What a match this can be! There will be pressure on both sides – England to get back to winning ways and Australia from the raucous crowd. Batting could be the deciding factor in the game as the two strong bowling units come face-to-face. The lack of a wicket-taking spinner could hurt the Aussies’ chances, though, in this crucial encounter.
