The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Saturday will bounce with Ashes flavour as eternal enemies England and Australia battle it out in the 2019 World Cup warm up match.

This match might not be official and the stats might not count, but expect the game to be intense as both sides prepare for the World Cup in the right earnest.

England come into the series on the back of a 4-0 series win over Pakistan that has seen them score 340+ in every batting innings. Australia, on the other hand, have been on a slew of practice matches with New Zealand XI and Windies proving to be sparring partners.

England

The hosts have now zeroed down on their final XV, with Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson and James Vince earning their spots in place of David Willey, Joe Denly and Alex Hales. All three will expect to earn some practice and put their names forward for final XI selections.

Like they have shown against Pakistan, England will hope that their batting will continue to flourish. Jason Roy (277 runs, SR 114.46) and Jonny Bairstow (211 runs, SR 132.70) will once again look to give strong starts. Eoin Morgan’s form against Pakistan (SR 132.25) showed that he is a strong presence in the middle-order.

Australia

There is a lot of churning in the Aussie camp, albeit for a good cause. Steve Smith and David Warner have come back into the reckoning and will be looking to continue their form from the warm ups. Especially Smith, who has now hit three fifties in as many practice games against New Zealand and Windies.

There will be an equal amount of focus on the Aussie bowlers, at least the pacer trio of Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Pat Cummins. All three warmed up with two wickets each in the practice game, but it is their fitness also that will be under focus.

Match Up

Will all 15 players set to feature, this match could be a tussle between the Aussie bowlers and the England batsmen. With the hosts regularly stitching 300+ scores, this match could also see another such game!

History & Statistics

  • England have lost only once at home in 16 ODIs since July 2017.
  • Six of the last seven home ODIs that England batted first, they have scored 300+.
  • Since the start of 2017, Australia have won just once against England (W1, L10).

Key Players

Jofra Archer has been the subject of intense scrutiny over the last few months over his World Cup selection. Now that he has edged out David Willey, Archer will look to forward his case for a starting role once the tournament starts.

Steve Smith will have a long road to redemption, but as his form over the practice matches has shown, he is on the right path. His average in England (30.45 compared to career average of 41.84) also needs a lift once the World Cup starts.
